Nice RH reef(boulders). Picks up with a peak and down the line, forms a good wall section that can barrel on the right tide and swell. Good short wave for all skills. Rock hop in and out of the water. Can get urchins on the inside and popular area for fishing. Occasional shark and dolphins. 8 out of 10 when its good.
Home to some top notch Aussie Surfers. Good quality Beach Break and a bit of a swell magnet. Left Hander breaks against rip running out beside rocks on the Sth End. Sth end point can break in Easterly Swells also. Good waves all the way down the beach, lefts and rights. Not to bad on the crowds, mild localism.
Powerful RH Point Break. Popular Contest Spot. Can be a fairly long and fast wave on the right day. Take off is at a sucky ledge which quickly steps up and forms a tube section followed by a fast section than runs down the line, accross the rocky shelf. The wave then hits a fairly shallow final section great for cutbacks and grommets. Surfers have died at this break, not for the beginner.
Another swell magnet when all alse is flat. Good little fun beach break with lefts and rights and a couple of different spots. A small beach with a rock outcrop in the centre, that can give you a fright if your not told its there. Works best on a NE Swell. Catches all swell directions although it's very dependent on sandbanks. Sometimes a left in front of the surfclub and a small right running into the nearby rip. Peaky lefts and rights down beach. Nthrn End is best. After a few good days surf in may 2009 the crowds are horrific and the surf is back to inconsistent and badly formed.
Fairy Bower. Manly. Rated No#17 out of Australia's top 200 surf spots. Right hand point break. Shallow rocks mostly but the wave starts at the famous "Winki Pop"... No, not the one at Bells. "Winki" is a ledge that starts the wave off with a decent tube section which opens up a nice wall section called "suck up". Many guys will sit around the rock at suck up and start their wave here. The wave then works its way around the headland to the final section called race course. Race course is a good beginners and grommets area. The Bower can handle some pretty big surf and is popular when all else is maxed out. Works on NE, SE and Easterly swells. Ranges from 3foot up. Fairly powerful wave, not for the light hearted.
Dee Why Point in Sydneys North is a fairly exposed point break that has dependable surf. A dredging, semi-evil right-hand barrel that breaks hard over a shallow rock platform. When the swell exceeds 1.m The Point starts to cook, holding up to 4 m. The wave starts with a steep take off and fast tube section over the rock shelf (First rock). The tube section from first rock is followed by a fast wAll section that will tube again on low tide, and this is followed by a fairly a full shoulder section that can then meet up with the beach break. Popular wave but not for the inexperienced reef/point rider.
