Magnet Bay is a nice left hand point break on the Banks Peninsular. It handles small to 10ft surf and works best on a southerly swell. Magnet can be quite fickle but is a nice wave when it is working. Getting in and out can be a pain (literally) with razor sharp boulders. It's an idea to bring booties.
Magnet is the easiest spot to get to on the Banks Peninsular so is ideal to avoid the crowds at the main Christchurch breaks.
Head out of Christchurch towards Akaroa on 75. Take the first right once you get past the lake onto Kinloch road and head over the hill. Take Te Oka Bay road and then a right onto Magnet Bay Road. It is a nice little drive but make sure your car has good breaks.
There is nowhere to stay but it is not much more than an hour outside Christchurch where there are plenty of places to stay from hotels to backpackers.
Park outside the farmhouse and walk down to the break.
Check out the sights and sounds of Christchurch. Go punting on the river and then head for a beer at the Dux.
In winter the ski fields are within easy reach so grab your snowboard and head for the hills. You have got to love New Zealand - surf in the morning and snowboard in the afternoon. Nice
