Last week, North Orange County saw a couple days of classic fall conditions, solid south swell, and big, sand-sucking barrels breaking yards from shore. The make rate for most was not very high, but the adrenaline factor was well above anything normally associated with Newport Beach. No one got THAT hurt, and most everyone came in smiling.
Surfline’s Kevin Wallis breaks it down: “This run of SSW Southern Hemisphere swell had a bit more south in it than the swell from the previous week. But it came from a similar setup — a storm that tracked across much of the South Pacific. It flared as a deep and distant low on the western side of the basin before taking a more favorable path toward Southern California as it moved through the central South Pacific. It wasn’t a monster storm but was impressive with peaks seas in the 35-40 foot range.
“The long period SSW swell picked up through Tuesday, peaked on Wednesday and slowly backed down through the end of the work week. It was a great direction and swell period for the Wedge in Newport Beach. Conditions have been good to excellent as well – light wind and glassy in the mornings, just weakly onshore through the middle part of the day and then glassing off again in the evenings.”
