“I almost didn’t go,” Ben explained. “The forecast allowed for a short window but the winds were going to be strong, and I was dreading the bitter cold water north of the cape. We drove through the night and woke up to an ugly morning in New England. When the front passed and the wind switched, Mother Nature sent an omen in the form of a mind-blowing rainbow right on the horizon. After 300 duck-dives and being denied entry to the lineup [twice] by the relentless short-period swell, I was barfing all over myself on the beach and thinking I made a poor decision to leave Pennsylvania. I was the last of the gang to make it out and was feeling every minute of 43 years old.”

“When I got out, I was stoked to get a quick in-and-out and prove that it was rideable,” he continued. “That settled the nerves enough to stop hyperventilating and find the rhythm of breath I held like a meditation for the rest of the day. I swear this wave was a reward from Mother Ocean herself; an apology for a year of bad luck in the ocean. It came right to me in slow motion with a perfect little chip-shot to send me over the edge. I almost backed out mentally, but once I committed there was no turning back… I was in a safety stance for the drop as the vacuum of air within the barrel seemingly held me still. Then the suck-in let up, and for a second, I was in a room of moving water larger than any I’ve been in, in any ocean. It was still and calm and silent. My legs straightened and relaxed and I was standing casually for a second before the suck-in turned to a blow-out. It propelled me into daylight a different man than had entered.”
