Technique, feedback, encouragement? short vid on a small day

Postby Blackvans1234 » Fri May 22, 2020 6:11 am

Ive been putting in a lot of time and recently started to do cross training (namely flexibility and stretching, I am nowhere near flexible enough for surfing)
Things to mention
Conditions: Poor. Two surf breaks seen here. One is my preferred break (wave #1), more hollow, down the line.
Waves #2-4 a more slow spot. I was mainly working on cutbacks and trying to reach the inside reform on these waves, which did not go well. The few that did go well were not captured

Things to work on:
Compress more in legs, don't bend over so much (constant struggle, see previous comment on flexibility).
Rail to rail in slow sections
Front arm to guide board during top turn (wave #1 most specifically) - I got excited when I saw the section and may have tried a little too hard
Drop back knee in more, roll foot.
Back foot on traction pad for more critical turns. can more forward in slow sections.
Lifetime Wave Count:
Frontside: 284
Backside: 3

The two that are most 'obvious' are

- bending at the waist rather than your knees (which you have identified as well)
- consequentially, having to hold your hands out in front of you to balance (rather than having hands on each side of your body)

When you stand more upright you actually look pretty good.

My suggestion is that you turn your shoulders (hips really) a bit more to the front when you are surfing along the wave, try to have your right hand outside the right rail. You did this for the middle bit of wave 3

This will let you move your hips around to change your weighting - your hips can go back and forth (rather than side to side).

I'm sure waikikichan can say something about the back arm

Actually, from what I've been seeing, it's his Front Arm that's got the major problem.

What do you mean by that ? So are you thinking you need to be more flexible to be more better at turning ?

I don't know if you've ever seen all the big uncles ( and auntys ) at Waikiki, a bit over weight and have a hard time picking up their board from the ground, but rip in the water. As for myself, I am one of the stiffest inflexible people around. I can't even touch my toes.

Looks like you are doing okay for 284 frontside waves and 3 backside waves
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
