Highcliffe is one of a number of south coast beach breaks. It needs a good south west groundswell to produce good waves, and can get blown out quite easily. It is best on a mid or high tide, check along the groynes for the best waves.
You are more likely to surf this break on a small windswell, which will ultimately be unfulfilling.
The beach is signposted from the center of town on the A337.
There is a car park at the top of the cliff, which overlooks all the breaking waves. Check the spot from here before you go down.
Between Hichcliffe and Barton on Sea there are no cliff protection. As a result the cliffs are still being eroded. That's good news for the flat days, (and there are plenty of those on the south coast of England) as this stretch of coast is rich in fossils. A quick look might result in finding sharks teeth, fish or mammal remains.
It's also interesting to see how effective the sea defences are here, comparing the protected coast with the unprotected section.
