One Insane Deep Barrel From Indo’s Swell Of 2024

Lennix Smith is a fairly humble kid. When we talked with him about this boggling tube ride at the super hollow Jimmy’s reef near Krui, Sumatra, he was more keen to talk up his best friend Jarvis Earle, who’d just won the five star QS Krui Pro down the road. But Lennix’s wave was another kind of success story — the kind that happens when a contest drags you into the Spot during the best swell of the Indo year so far. “I was just sitting out there with (Josh) Kerrzy and Sierra,” he says, “and I waited a while and that one came through, and I thought, Oh, may as well swing and go. I didn’t know it would be that much of a nug but yeah, pretty happy.”

In the water, along with Lennix and the Kerrs, were Dane Henry and a couple of Lennix’s mates from back home in Australia, who’d come along for the ride — what Lennix refers to as a “hell crew”. Somehow though, it didn’t include any more of the hyper talented young QS surfers who’re on this contest/freesurf fun park ride with Lennix. “It’s good if you can escape it,” he says.
Next day he coached his mate Jarvis to the contest win, then flew out to the next QS fun park, which is, guess where? Lagundri Bay, Nias. And there’s more swell coming.
