Navy’s Deadly Sonar Threatens Whales, Petition

Postby long_man » Thu Nov 15, 2007 9:21 pm

Hey all you fellow Surfing-Waves forum goers..... :D

I've just had an e-mail sent to me via the NRDC Action Fund, giving information about the above......it read

 The U.S. Navy is refusing to take commonsense measures that could protect whales from being needlessly killed by high-powered sonar. Scientists have linked the use of mid-frequency sonar to hundreds of whale strandings and deaths around the world.

Navy warships use underwater speakers during routine sonar testing and training that blast the ocean with noise up to 245 decibels -- a sonic barrage roughly comparable to a Saturn V rocket at blast-off. That onslaught is so intense it can drive whales to panic and cause their organs to hemorrhage :!:

Basically if as many of us as possible could sign up to this, then it will hopefully reduce the chance of the project going ahead somewhat.

the link is -

Navy Sonar Project Petition

all you have to do is enter your e-mail address and a few other details, for those that are outside the USA, just scroll down the "State" column until you get to the "-------------" and click that.

thanks everyone....... 8)

Do it! I spent all summer volunteering with wild bottlenose dolphins in Wales, and generally working for a marine conservation organisation educating people about the marine environment, its the first step!!!

I would love to think that this would actually make a difference. I love animals and the post about the whale and dolphin slaughter that was posted a few weeks back really upset me, but, I fear that if the U.S government wants their ships fitted with this kind of stuff, then anything we say or do is going to make naff all difference.
It all comes down to money, and who is bribing who.
Nothing we say or do will change it.
People at the top who make the decisions about such matters are hell bent on living for now, and making as much money for themselves to enjoy as possible, and don't give a flying fig about the consequences to the wildlife or enviroment.
