Tides

Postby Chris369 » Fri Aug 24, 2007 1:00 pm

Is it better for the tide to be high or low for surfing? And has that got anything to do with the tide being in and out?

/noob

Edit: And are the tide times on magic seaweed normally accurate? I've read on here that their forecasts are a bit hit and miss but not about tide times.

MSW tides are accurate - tides are pretty predictable

As for the high/low question - it depends entirely on the break. Some places work best on low tide, while other dont work at all at low tide. Same for high tide, and every state in between.

As a general rule, the waves will be a little larger on the push (ie incoming) and a little smaller on the drop. But this depends on a number of factors too - some places it barely makes a difference, and other places it makes the difference between headhigh and kneehigh.

A general rule of thumb I follow for So Cal is the incoming tide is better. Don't know if that holds up in the UK, but thought I'd put my two pfennings into the conversation...
