I've always found it slightly odd. It just seem like vanity, or some underlying feeling of inadequacy.

a couple of my mate got into doing it with steroids...now that was all vanity....jokers.

I have a weird physique. I have huge strong legs, and strong shoulders and back. Other then that I am not super ripped. I workout to get fast in my sports of choice.

yeah, that's it though, I try to get fitter to play Rugby and Surf...getting fit to play sports, or just to be fit and healthy has a point, but body building just for the sake of being bigger...???

I do appreciate the effort it takes to do it, just begs the question why?

haha dec... nice one that made me laugh!

I see what you guys mean about vanity and stuff but surely you could say the same thing about girls and women who diet and go to the gym to loose weight and look smaller. Its just an opinion of what looks good, for my boyfriend, being "big" is what he thinks looks good so he is taking the steps to achieve that. I think as long as he doesnt go too far or endanger his health then its alright.

hey Jennie,

wow - with all that does he actually need food??? just kidding

from the list you provided it looks fairly regular for non pro body builders, as long as he's taking steroids  I try to avoid the gym as much as possible but on the few horrible occasions I have gone Ive drank my boyfriends (gym guy) protein shakes afterward as they are apparently good for healing muscle damage as much as building. I take Milk Thistle because I have been known to drink a fair amount - there have been studies where people with mild liver scaring (cirhosis (sp)) have healed more than people who havent taken it.

the building up of fat and then reducing his food intake to reduce fat and increase muscle is what actors do to look good for a role (think brad bit in fight club and will smith in Ali) - they do it under pro advice but as long as he doesnt go crazy there shouldnt be any problems.

if he starts eating 12 egg omlettes for brekkie and his fellas start shrinking, possibly time to rethink.

oh, did I not mention - he looks HOT :D

When it comes to cutting cycles people often throw anabolic steroids which would help cut back on the catabolic process which is the natural breakdown of muscle (this happens most while we sleep). Steroids such as winstrol help in cutting cycles for this very reason.

Also the misconception that fat converts to muscle is wrong, however fat is something we all need to MAKE muscle as fat is stored energy, so you big guys have a lot of energy you need to release! :)

Also I don't know if the point of this thread was to learn how to cutdown as I did not read every response, but there is supplements that are out there that are not steroids which will drastically cut down on bodyfat. One of these supplements is Clenbuterol. It is to be used for 2 week intervals as the bodies receptors get used to it by then. In studies horse which were administered Clenbuterol lost 16 lbs+ in 2 weeks with excercise. I have used this before when I was still working out after bulking phases and it helps alot (what doesnt help is getting an ulcer due to stress and losing 40 lbs!). Extended use of clenbuterol is possible through intake of Benadryl which acts to clean out the receptors and makes them continue to uptake the Clenbuterol. However extended use of Clenbuterol has showed in studies to lead to some minor hardening of the heart muscle, not something I think anyone wants to risk doing?

That is a very broad and inaccurate statment. I am a competitive swimmer, and I lift. It is all dependent on how you do it. That is what detarmains whether its better for your surfing. In my case it is alot of tricep, shoulder and back work. Makes paddling that much easier...so ya, it helps alot. I can out paddle most people, just cus I can keep going(though I am also training for a 4km race, so I can swim for over an hour).......

batman, you could lift all you wanted and it wouldn't hurt you. it sounds like you put your cardio workouts first and lifting is secondary, i know lifting actually helps in endurance excersizes if done properly. when i say i don't lift, i'm saying i don't lift heavy weights and i don't try to build bulk! bulk actualy gets in the way of physical activities like surfing!

I agree that lifting helps surfing, but I think what was being said that "bodybuilding" doesn't help your surfing, because you cannot possibly use all of the muscles that you build while you are surfing, so therefore it is extra weight.

I thought I was into it, but apparently not. I lifted 4-5 times a week and had a very rigorous program that was all computer analyzed to give results and stuff, but I was never into it for looks, just for football. I did really enjoy lifting, but I never plan on making a competitve hobby out of it, of course I'm not of the competitive nature really, the only thing I enjoy doing competitively is racing (skis, skateboards, I'd love to do cars or motorcycles, but don't feel like getting thrown in jail, haha)

But I never did any suppliments or steriods.

Is this just a myth, or will too much Creatin make you "freeze"?

Learn something new everyday. I always thought you could change fat into muscle (and vice versa). Because when Body Builders or big guys get older and stop doing the weights - all that muscle turns into fat.
Also Ive seen a lot of people go from fat to buff by hitting the gym because they had a lot of body mass to work on to get bigger.

jenny, weightlifters spend to much time in the gym, and not enough time with you, all they think about is getting bigger, they don't know when to stop, they can't stop, it is an addiction, just like surfing!

It seems like a pretty normal cutting stack to be honest; he wont be just taking those, they'll be spread out throughout the day with/inbetween meals. ...he should add fish oil in there if cutting!

In some way it is a vanity thing; but at the same time it's certainly a great outlet. I go gym and do similar training 4 days a week and love it; it makes you feel alot more alive putting your body through rigorous excersize; and packing on muscle is rewarding!

The reason big muscley guys get fat fast, is because of their metabolism. Lean people tend to have a faster metablism, or people who do alot of cardio. Muscle heads tend to have a slower metabolism(anology, desil cars vs. asian tuners, low rpm vs high rpm), so a slower metabolism means burning off FAR less colories, so they need to eat alot less. Though after years of eating a whole cow a day, they have a hard time cutting back, and arnt working out to work it all off(what happened to me when I hurt my knee a year ago).

Thats not so true; the more muscle mass your body has, the more calories you burn to maintain that muscle mass; thus your metabolism is boosted.

Muscle is metabolically active where as fat isnt. Even when resting, muscle requires energy - whilst it doesn't need huge amount; but just enough to make a difference in BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).

Hmm...I tried to put on a bit of weight for a while (I'm lanky as owt!), which was a mistake, as being a student I couldn't afford to eat enough to do so!

Anyway, I don't do much without a bit or research before hand. And although I never actully took supplements (£££-the reason) I found this handy website on creatine.
