New surf location

Postby surfin_daddy » Fri Jan 19, 2007 11:03 am

Has anybody else heard on the news lately, that somewhere here in the south west of the UK, the local council are MAKING one of the beaches into a surf spot to attract tourist. They plan to make a sand bank or false reef or something to generate the waves.......Hope it ain't in minehead cause the waters full of pooh and nasty stuff.

Er, do you mean the reef they're planning to build in Newquay? Hardly what I'd call 'making a new surf spot', more like 'mucking around with one that already works'

I heard something about that as well, it's supposed to be a completely new resort, I think they're even making a beach as well.

Speaking of which, random piece of general knowledge - there weren't any sandy beaches on Mallorca until they imported god knows how many tonnes of sand.

Ha ha ha.
Let's just think about that... 10,000 surfers a year, thats about 30 (different) surfers every day. Let's say, charitably, that bournemouth works one day in ten - thats now 300 surfers on that reef.

More realistically, it wont work all summer, so now lets say 500 surfers on it every time it works...

Still want to surf it....?

Possibly, maybe, well yes but...

I think there is a bigger picture here.

I think there may well be other reasons for putting it where they intend.

They are talking about putting this reef right around one of the old piers as a sort of Groin to help stop the beach sand erosion all along the Bournemouth and Poole coast.

Recently the local councils have spent millions restoring the beaches by dredging up the sea bed and dumping sand back on shore, and have constructed large groins to help retain this new sand, I believe the new reef will be planned to be part of this beach retention plan.

Its doesnt help when the a council member goes onto local radio and declares the it will "CREATE" waves for "year round surfing instead of waiting for weather conditions dictating whether there is surf". They seem to think its some kind of wave machine, we all know thats not going to happen but there a thousands more who believe that is exactly what will happen ....ah well, might mean the pier will be a little quieter
