Exercise & lose weight for surfing

Postby SurferFreak15 » Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:13 pm

Hey. I need to lose some weight for surfing. I just want some tips on losing weight on how much to excersise.

I am 6ft and I weigh near 195lbs my goal is 165lbs. I lift weights and all also. Can some give me some tips on like how many of each excersise i should do. And also maybe some streches and all.

lifting weights wont do anything to cut weight (unless you do an aerobic, low weights, quick paced circuit). in fact, if you are lifting the right way, you are gaining weight (adding muscle, ie weight)

theres two easy things to losing weight
- heavy cardiovascular workouts (running, swimming, surfing, biking)
- eat healthy (self explanatory, stay away from complex carbs, sugars, calories, etc.)

run, run, run. i dont know your level of running, but if you can discipline yourself you should be doing any where from 3 to 5 miles a day at a decent pace. try to put in a 20 mile week if possible (remember, it wont be easy to lose 30 lbs, thats a lot).

swimming is great to fat burn, too, but you have to do it in a larger quanity (relatively) than running. you'll have to do at least 3000m a day to see any results from swimming. but its still great exercise and it hits strenght really well.

it just comes down to self-discipline. if you can have a good workout routine, and a good diet, then in no time you'll be where you want to be. but it wont be fun. you will not be excited to go running 5 miles a day, or swimming for 2 hours straight. just do it for the surf. thats all we've got in the end, anyways

I think you mean avoid simple carbs. Complex carbs- whole grain breads, nuts, things with fiber - are good for you. Anything highly refined is bad.

Would suggest reading the Sonoma Diet book. Not really a diet as much as a healthy eating style, with focus on certain "power foods". I actually enjoy eating this way and have dropped from low 190's to upper 170's with no effort .

For exercise I'd work on back stretches and general shoulder/arm work. Paddling takes more out of me than anything else to do with surfing.

.. wanna lose weight fast ?!.. other than a healthy diet and the excercises mentioned above .. get yourself a speed (skipping) rope !! .. 3mins of skipping is equal to a 15minute medium to fast pace run  .. being a tubby and once upon a time a fighter  .. i used to gain and drop weight within weeks .. lots and lots and lots of skipping rope practice dude 8)

I beg to differ, lifting heavy weights is the best way to lose fat, you might gain a bit of muscle in the beginning but with the right diet you can lose the fat and keep any muscle you already have (which is what you want to do i assume?)

There isnt two ways to lose weight, there is only one, burn off more calories than you eat. Simple as that. Running is fine but you can run all day and still not lose weight if you eat loads (come and look at the fatties on running machines down my gym if you dont believe me). Also dont stay away from complex carbs, you want those in your diet.

Really the best way is to work out how many calories you use in a day and plan out your diet around that, a high protein diet would be what i recommend and plan it around 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones

btw, i know a bit about this, i lost over 50lbs in under a year without losing a single pound of lean mass just by doing weights, surfing and planning my diet.

Im sure CJ can give you some more in depth advice on this...

I agree. (morning all). When I look at the plodders in my gym their bodies never change. Yet when I look at the people (expecially women) who set goals (often for body building & sculpting contests - crap like that) they're the ones who make real changes...and they're doing weights real hard & planning their food intake properly.
Personally I think I do more good to my body in 45 mins hard-out in the gym than fat gits trundling along on the running machines for 2 hours bored out of their trees.

The thing with weights is the indirect good things as well, strengthen ligaments, build paddling muscles, increase bone density, and have a stronger & fitter body. Rather than just tired from dieting & plodding along.

Carbs and fat mmmmmmm. Yummy, my two fave food groups!

I lost weight by following a low carb diet I got from Linda Gassenheimers' low carb cook book.. I cant usually follow diets without binging on crisp sandwiches and pizza but I could follow this without being hungry or craving carbs like I usually do and because the meals were genuinely enjoyable its still part of my diet. Low carb diets get a bad press cos of the extremes some go to but I felt much healthier for it.
I eat simple carbs again now but have been able to balance it more and have kept the weight off.

- Imagine the possibilities if you combine that with a decent exercise schedule like the suggestions above!

the thing i found helped with keeping a rigid diet was to have a cheat day every fortnight or so, that doesnt mean stuffing your face with mcdonalds or anything, still eating good stuff but not worrying about the calories etc. jsut once in a while it helps to keep you sane and stick to the right portions during the week.

Also bear in mind working out your diet doesnt mean you have to live on lettuce or something, you can still have really tasty food, just work it into your calorie and macronutirient totals.

...also, the 6 meal a day thing doesnt work for me. I love to feel full after a good meal and dont have time to plan and eat 6 meals a day. If I know Im on three meals a day and thats it Im fine, but as soon as it turns to 6 meals a day I would count a packet of crisps and an apple as a meal. Obviously thats just me trying to justify eating crap in some kind of way but if you do struggle with discipline I would recommend 3 meals a day. With a low carb diet i didnt seem to suffer the energy slumps that I would usually get between meals.

I always find that im very hungry in the morning through to lunch but not when I get home from work so I have a large breakfast/lunch and smaller dinners. There is so much conflicting advice and evidence you kinda need to think about what suits you. Fit exercise into as much as your life as possible, hitting the gym hard and just getting out and about so it doesnt feel like a chore.

Gowercharger - only cheat every 2 weeks? Wow, all credit to you!!

A good way to aid weight loss is to speed up your rate of metabolism. If you metabolise fats quicker you will lose more weight during exercise.

One way I have heard that you can do this is to eat lots! Believe it or not, this works. If you eat lots of smaller healthy meals throughout the day over an extended period your rate of metabolism will increase dramatically.

This may be worth a try, especially if you enjoy your food as much a I do. It must be healthy food though. Anyway, whatever you end up doing, good luck!

Balance that is the key. To have a healthy allround lifestyle. Lets face it bodybuilding is a completelly unatural form of excersise thats why bodybuiders generally suffer a lot more from heart attacks than a couch potato in their old age. Why put your body through such stress go for something a lot lighter skipping maybe yoga or summin simular. And having a balanced meal is usually a good idea these people who start cutting out certain foods like chocalate are seriously misguided. The ancient greeks had a saying "nothing in excess" Good advice.

I've lost 35lb in the last eight months by doing the following.

Eat less, do more

Go for a paddle when it is flat

Go for a surf when there are waves

But remember that if you are only 16 then you may not have finished growing yet and things could sort themselves out in the next year or two.

Ive got asthma but I still go running, I just take two puffs on my Ventolin Inhaler and off I go. Paula Radcliff is an asthmatic and she is a champion runner.
I think you deff have to do a bit of cardio work to loose weight it will even help strengthen your lungs as your lungs intercostal and accessory muscles will have to work harder and so will benifit your asthma (thats just my personal view- Im not sure if thats a medical fact!!!!)
I start by gradualy increasing the speed I run but keep the distance the same and then once I start to feel comfortable I slow back down but increase the distance gradualy and then the speed and so on- just dont try pushing yourself too fat too soon as you will damage your knees. Also when I want to loose weight I just cut back a bit on the food so that im burning more than I eat and also I dont eat any bread-that seems to help a lot!!!!!

i recommend going swimming EVERY day and eating healthly. last year i swam a mile every day (yes, it nearly killed me, but it was worth it) for 12 weeks and lost 28pounds. When ever I want to lose a bit of weight I just do alot of swimming and it works for me. Requires will-power though!
