weird phonecall :s

Postby IdRatherBeSurfing » Tue Aug 08, 2006 8:15 pm

I've had a 'withheld number' trying to ring me on my mobile over the last day or so; I'm normally wary or answering withheld numbers as Ive had trouble in the past with prank and malicious calls etc.

Anyway, I just answered it and a voice asked me to confirm my name - which I did. The voice (a lady) said that your Barclaycard advisor wants to speak to you, errr ok then :? and I was told that I'm going to be put into a queue.

I waited for 30 seconds or so and the phone sounded like it went dead - no 'on hold music' etc so I said a tentative 'hello' down the line and the voice said "oh your advisor is busy at the moment, whats the first line of your address" at which point I hung up.

Surely if my 'advisor' (whoever that is) wanted to speak to me they'd ring me directly, and would have left an anwserphone message on one of the previous missed calls??

This just doesnt seem to add up at all :?

Think you've done the right thing. I had a phone call from 'my bank' asking me in one question for my date of birth, mothers maiden name and 1st line of my address. So I said to her that she should know that info. She said she did, so I told her to tell me it and I would say if it were right or wrong. She said no. I then said to her that she could be anyone and her answer was once we've finished this call if you do 141 you'll get the number and if you phone it back it'll be the bank, "Err, ok then". I didn't and they never phoned me back.

At the end of the day if its importants enough they'll send you a letter!

Sorry about the I said she said etc!

I'm extra wary of anybody calling me i don't know and i make a point of being very rude to them and that i don't like being cold called. Even if it is my bank i tell them i'm busy and that they should send me a letter.

My parents were getting so sick of it they just leave all calls for the answer machine, if its dodgy sales companies etc then they hang up as soon as they hear the answermachine kick in.

I never answer my homephone cos I havent given anyone I know the number, so I've switched the ringer off.

I recently changed to Talk Talk and have an answering service now. Every day I get about 4 messages from a 'Mr Wilson' who wants to talk to me about a private business matter!

I'm starting to get scared of Mr Wilson

I've also had those 'phishing' calls where they say they are your bank and go through security and ask for all your details......I also asked for their number and I would call them......they declined for security reasons

Be careful!

I had a lady phone up one night and she asked me if it was convinient to talk and I said I was naked but fine to talk. Every so often I would say "Uh, mmm yeah" "Thats nice" "Oh yeah" She asked me if I would like her to phone back and I answered her by saying it helped! They never phoned back!

I too like wasting their time, "Can I speak to Mr Jones please" "Oh I'm sorry he can't come to the phone today he's wearing blue" A long bewildered pause follows, then "When will he be available?" "When he's wearing red"

In my eyes telling someone to flesh off will p*ss them off and also may get you some grief which will eventually p*ss you off. Plus I don't think you get any satisfaction out of telling someone to flesh off!

that's why I love the american do not call list, we're on it and it dramatically cut down on those evil sales calls, though we are still allowed to get market research/survey calls.
