Best Fins to Control a Super Loose Board

Postby GoneTropo » Thu Sep 14, 2023 7:21 pm

Greetings All! I just bought a new board (6'4 Psycho Killer by Lost) and paired it with the Futures Mayhem 5-fin set (in Large; I'm 6'2, 195 lbs.). I've only ridden it in the thruster configuration and found that this setup is WAY too loose and skatey. The board seems to have no drive or directional control at all; it’s just super squirrely, loose, and has no flow. My question is, What specific Futures should I buy to significantly tighten up this board? Is there a fin setup with a Ride Number of 1? If I rode it as a quad and got the TMF-1 trailer, would that tighten it up? I desperately want to make this board more stable and harder to turn (which seems weird to say). Thanks so much for all your help!!

Check out the futures control series. Pancho Sullivan’s and Jack Freestone’s are popular here with big guys in serious waves. Stiff AF.

Honestly I think the issue is with the board. I’m 52 years old and 209lbs and would look for the pro not bro size in that length (6’4”) board and I’m a bang average surfer. I think you’ve got too much float and that’s where the skatey vibe is coming from.

You have the board already so try and stiffen it up with some fins. More rake the better.

No need to change the Arrow. If your foot isn’t over the back fin, then that could be the problem with drive and looseness.
If you’re not running a traction pad, is your foot bumping up against the leash plug on a hard turn ?

Hey Geezer and Waikiki! Thanks mucho for your responses. Yeah, I hear you about the float, but where I surf (New England), I need a stick with additional volume (it's 40.5L) for paddling speed to compete with all the longboarders and for buoyancy on winter days when I'm rocking the 5/4 and hood. As for back foot placement, it's typically in front of the rear fin. I'll move it farther back and see if that helps with controlling this wily beast. I appreciate the tip!

Switching to a quad setup with a TMF-1 trailer fin could help tighten up your board and provide better control. Consider trying it out, and you can fine-tune the feel by experimenting with different fin sizes in the quad setup if needed. Good luck!
