Portugal and Spain - what wetsuit?

Postby skubaman » Tue Jun 20, 2023 6:44 am

Hi all,
Traveling with entire family to Europe and intend to catch a surf session on Portugal central coast and close to Barcelona. Don't currently own a 3/2 long and trying to travel light. How do you think a 2/1 spring suit holds up? I have a 4/3, but again, trying to travel light.
During the Summer in SoCal I can trunk it with a 0.5mm neoprene rashguard, or wear the spring suit.
Otherwise I need to bring the 4/3. Renting the suit is probably not a good idea.
Where should I plan to surf in Portugal? Peniche area? I will need to rent a board.
BTW, is their consistent surf next to Barcelona (or even a couple hours away) during the summer? I will stay 3 weeks so might be able to go to a few different spots, even farther (San Sebastián?)
I speak Portuguese and Spanish.
Thanks

Peniche/ Baleal is a good area, plenty of options lots of board rentals. Your current wetsuit should be Ok
Barcelona in Spain is on the Mediterrean sea not well suited for surf at all. but will be warmer
Long flat spells limited breaks often only local short fetch wind swells, severe localism enhanced by rarity.

Both areas have board rentals
How are you travelling between Barcelona and Peniche?
12hour drive, so maybe flights then board option definitely rental!
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

A 2/1 spring suit can be suitable for surfing on the central coast of Portugal and close to Barcelona during the summer. The water temperatures in these regions typically range from around 18°C to 23°C (64°F to 73°F) in the summer, which can be comfortable for a 2mm wetsuit.

yeah, As for surf locations, the Peniche area is an excellent choice in Portugal, offering consistent waves and a variety of breaks. In Barcelona, we can explore spots like Castelldefels or Gavà for consistent summer surf. If you're up for a bit more travel, San Sebastián could be a rewarding option. Renting a board is wise, ensuring convenience and flexibility throughout your three-week stay. Your language skills will surely enhance your experience, making connections and navigating the local scene even smoother.

If you are ready to go as far as San Sebastian - go a little bit further west! Beatiful waves all along the Basque shoreline, with Zumaia, Zarautz etc being really nice. Itzurun is well know for GoT fans as the Beach from Dragonstone, and is not only very beautiful, but has great waves, too.

In Summer, a 3/2 in the morning and shorty otherwise are the most common thing
