Please advice regarding serious surfing offers

Postby Claudi » Sun Jan 15, 2023 7:28 pm

Hello everyone, I would like to learn how to surf and am currently looking around for suitable opportunities on the internet.

I have read through what surf camps write on their websites, and in addition, comments and reviews from visitors. I got the impression that it can be risky to simply book such accommodation and a course.

For this reason, I have registered here and hope to find surfers among you who can make suggestions for reputable surf spots based on their experience. It is important to me that when I book accommodation and a course including equipment, I get what I booked and don't find out on the spot that I have been cheated.

I am a beginner and will start from scratch. I would like to rent the equipment on site the first time.

I was thinking of a holiday mainly in Europe like France, Italy, Spain, Portugal or Ireland/Northern Ireland. It would be nice if the accommodation is quick and easy to reach from the airport.

My budget is not very big, but still I would not like to sleep in a tent. I would like a room with a bed, bed linen, shower and at least breakfast. My preferred language is English. I plan to fly in May/June or September.

Many thanks in advance and best regards

I would suggest reviewing the sites in mainland Europe first,Pure Surf is one such camp, they have house , dormitory and good tent accommodation and costs in France Portugal and Spain, I don‘t suggest Ireland and Northern Ireland because of water temperature although the re are surf schools there.
A helpful point for us to offer advice, would be where are you based? Eliminating or reducing travel cost would help!

Cornwall, Wales and Devon have surf schools, and they speak some resemblance of English.

A point to consider some surf schools offer pick up at the nearest airport
A little more information about you will help us help you get the best fit! :D

If you do take the uk route I recommend north Cornwall if you are planning on learning at this time of year (our summer). You could probaly find some cheap accommodation and do a long term hire of a board. You will be in every day if you do this, as you will have waves breaking every day and warm water compared to the rest of the UK (but still need a wetsuit, even in the summer!). Are you a complete beginner (never surfed before) or had some lessons?
When the wave breaks here, don’t be here. Or you’re gonna get drilled…

Hello Jaffa1949, hello PipeDreams, thank you for your support. I am 42 years old, live in Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany and am a surf beginner. I've never stood on a surfboard before and am starting from scratch. But I am sporty. I would prefer to go to France, which is not so far away. Pure Surf offers accommodation in Biarritz. That would actually be a great deal, because there is an international airport in Biarritz. However, they say that a car is absolutely necessary in this accommodation. I didn't want to rent a car expensively as well.

Now we know your origin, there are quite a few Pure Camps/school, in France Spain and Portugal, they are mostly a German company catering to Switzerland, Germany and Austria so obviously german speaking! There are a number of Camps in those countries. I won a prize in a surf competition to stay with them at Moliets, they had cabins, Sheddies ( which I don‘t recommend ) and tents.
Moliets has a small beach side town with food and shopping amenities, cafes.

Since you are unhindered by having a surf board you could probably bus to Moliets or other camps in Biarritz.

I watched the classes and there were several groups of courses age appropriate , which gives a good social life.

You could consider Peniche area in Portugal lots of different camps other than Pure, they cater to a lot of English learners so English is spoken,
They often have beachside cabin accommodation or rooms a walk away, Pure has a house.

If you can get out of car hire (that is a big saving) so i recommend walk to beach settings.

Have an internet chat with likely places , readthe independent reviews, but realise one camp is not going to make you a surfer ( sorry) it will be fun challenging, and hard physically).
Water time matters
Keep talking here, more advice will be offered! :D
