Surfing Nicaragua during the dry season

Hi,

just wondering if anybody can give me some advice - I´m planning a surf trip to Nicaragua from January to March - some people say it´s the worst time for surfing, too much wind, and swell consistency is around 20 to 30%. Actually, that sounds terrible. Other people say it´s the best time for beginners - waves are small but rideable (long or funboard) and almost no crowds. I´m confused. I´m still a beginner so I don´t need head-high conditions but I don´t want to waste my time on weak conditions. Any suggestions, or experiences? Thanks

I went surfing in Nicaragua in January 2009. Papagayo winds kick up every year Dec -Feb blowing off of Lake Nicaragua. 40 knot winds every day ruined the surf trip. Travel a little south to Costa Rica, brave the crowds and take advantage of all day offshores at Playa Grande or Playa Avellanas, get up early and have waves all to yourself. I travel to CR every Jan-Feb since 1997 to catch this offshore phenomena. Playa Guiones in Nosara is my favorite beach, can handle hundreds of surfers and breaks when other spots are flat.
