Surfing oahu any tips?

Postby User2004 » Tue Nov 01, 2022 12:34 pm

Hello,

I’m going on a 6 week surfing trip to oahu. Iam a intermediate surfer. Right now surfing a 6,7 bic surfboard. I’m 58kg and 164 cm tall. I want a new board what boards do you suggest for hawaii? I’m going with my sister she is a beginner. We have a apartment at waikiki beach, so will be surfing at waikiki beach a lot. Can you shortboard at waikiki beach? Also what are some other nice beaches to surf at on oahu. Will be there in the summer. If you have other tips let me know! :D

Just a hemisphere question, northern hemisphere summer, south shore and Waikiki is the surfaces, southern hemisphere summer /northern hemisphere winter storms generate the north shore swells, so depending on when your summer is will tell you what is on offer!
There are a lot of breaks in the Waikiki zone and a number of forum members who can fill you in and advise you how to handle the Uncles etc.
One of the best learning areas around!

The entire island has breaks all over. In the winter the north shore has the best waves (and biggest crowds). In the summer the south shore (Waikiki and surrounding areas) has the best swells and biggest crowds. There are lots of breaks around Waikiki that are shortboard surfable including from time to time the main breaks in Waikiki.. This site has a surf map with comments https://surfing-waves.com/atlas/north_a ... shore.html
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

For your sister, if she’s a true newbie have her take a lesson from one of the true Waikiki Beach Boys. Do not go to Dive Oahu stands by the Duke Statue, go further down the beach in front of the Moana / Outrigger hotels.
If she can already catch waves by herself but not really turn yet, then get a Costco Gerry Lopez soft board. You can also check Oahu Craigslist for used Wavestorms for about $50-70.

For yourself, if you’re going to be mainly in Waikiki, you need a longer board than 6’7”. That size might be okay for Diamond Head more East of Waikiki, but you have to figure out how to get there.
If you are a true Intermediate surfer by Hawaii standards, then you could try further down by Ala Moana side. But I hope you can handle getting scraped by the reef.
