Non-drill Exostosis Surgeon - Sydney to Newcastle

Postby CarboardDog » Sat Oct 22, 2022 11:52 pm

Hi,
I need my right ear fixed and currently my ENT specialist only uses the drill method.
There are many reasons why this approach is not ideal particularly that I already have some industrial deafness.
If anyone is interested here is a good video that weighs up the pros and cons. Of course, it's only one opinion;

My question for the forum is : Can anyone give me the name of an experienced surgeon who uses the non drill, permeatal approach, with osteotome tools (chisels).

Of course any name offered would not presumed as advice but information only at 100% my risk. Obviously, if you had a pleasant rather than unpleasant experience that information would help but that information would NOT determine my decision to proceed. I would do my own research. Just hard to find them..
I hope this is clear.
thanks

That is really a challenging question, since I no longer live in OZ and haven‘t lived on Central Coast Forries in particular i can only sympathise
I have exostosis, and lost a lot of hearing being shot in the right ear with a blank pistol shot while working at Old Sydney Town.
Decided that since most of the problem with the exostosis was my right ear anyway so no surgery!
Personal choice there, still surfing with ear plugs and Gath helmet in icy mountain river waves, no worsening of hearing loss, just have high quality hearing aids so the plugs etc are to ensure no water intrusion or drainage issues occur. seems to work for me.
Foot note often the exostosis removal can reoccur with either method of removal and personally sort of shudder about the black and decker so I chose not to do anything.

Have a wave at Forries for me! cheers :D Jaffa

River waves ?

Yeh, I have to get it done, while I do still have a slight window to my ear drum, and always using plugs, wax gets trapped and I have to get my ear vacuumed every 4 weeks at $130 a time. I get back $80 from Health Fund. The blockage starts after 2 weeks and can't be syringed.
I use 'Mighty Plugs' and, when used properly, keep absolutely every drop of water out of my ears, the only cheap, long time reusable watertight plugs that work other than 'blue tack' which is medically questionable and can leave residual bits in the ear. But with Mighty Plugs the downside is you can't hear anything which sucks. Fortunatley, so far, I have never had an infection..

I rejuventate Mighty Plugs with Beeswax..but that's another story. Happy to talk plugs with anyone who needs info. I've tried 'em all.
It's either $50 a month for life or find an expert like the chap in the video.

also...ear plugs can cause wax to build up in the ear canal; the plugs can push ear wax that was about to exit the ear, back into and further down the ear canal. Best solution is a good fitting neck and face sealed hood and, if ears need to be dry, 'Mighty Plugs' ear plugs moulded to form an outer ear seal but not pressed into the ear canal - under the hood is about as good as youn can get. Really annoying but there it is..

True about pushing wax further in, hood and what you are using seems OK hope you get a fix, I remember reading something about it in Tracks Mag.

So to encourage you, toucan have a short term river wave by opening up Wamberal, Avoca or Terrigal Lagoons:
Same happens with natural rocks on the bottom of rivers around the world,
Much fun but different to ride, there are a couple of man made ones nearby in Austria

This is a man made one

This is a natural wave.
