Some of the kook things my surfer friends said and done

- Whoever stand up on the board first has priority(even when at the shoulder)
- Peak doesn't get priority because they are hogging every wave
- If I'm at the shoulder and get run over, then obviously the person who was at the peak is at fault and not a good surfer
- Every wave is a party wave when it's crowded
- I'm going straight and if they hit me. It's their fault.
- I'm going down the line, why would I look behind me? If you're behind me then you obviously snaked me.
- (A surfer already caught the wave on the peak). Continues to paddle for it and drops the board on top of the other surfer. Proceed to say: I gave you space, I'm 3-4 feet away from you.

Told them that's the worse surfing etiquette I've encountered but apparently I'm wrong. It might sound sexist but if they were a guy, they would get punched in the face.

I'm not sure why they have that mindset and has been surfing for many years. I once surf with them multiple times a week and every time they get into confrontation and yelled at. Apparently it's never their fault. I mean if you go 3 consecutive times and got into argument, how many times does it take to acknowledge that you're the source of the problem.

There may be something to what your friend says because they have been able to keep surfing using those rules. If there is no one to stop them they can do whatever they want. If it was here someone would show up on a SUP and run them over or something like that. Maybe the other surfers would be pushing them off the waves but if it's all beginners then it can just be survival of the fittest.

Other surfers have called them out. My friends response were they are just aholes. The irony is that if some other surfers does the same thing to them, they get all mad and call them out.

I usually just paddle to a different break if I'm with them. It's just so embarrassing. This isn't just one friend that does this. I've met multiple surfers like this. They claim they are better surfer than me. My wave count is like 15 in an hour vs their 5 that are basically drop-in on another surfer.

I mean they are nice friends, but totally an arrogant kook.

A half-good surfer from California, was telling us local surfers at Queens Waikiki, similar things. That we have to pull out if he drops in because of the fact that he doesn't have eyes behind his head. His belief/theory was we can see him / he can't see us, so it's on us to avoid him.

So you all went along with his rules? Or cut him some slack because he is not from there? By his rules you could make him have to give way on every wave.

I wonder how those rules work if you bottom turn around him so that you are in front? He can see you now so does he have to give way?

Exactly OMS, I politely agreed with him and then proceeded to drop in on him, on every wave he went for, for the next 1/2 hour. He soon left.

( please don’t get me wrong, I detest people who drop in. But in this instance, this was a teaching moment, that hopefully he will learn from )

I am ashamed of my fellow Californians. (Assuming OP is from Cali. Sure sounds like many at my local.)

That all sounds like trash, except for the one about the surfer on the peak hogging. I kind of agree with that. After watching someone catch a wave and paddle straight to the front of the pack, I'm more likely to go on them. I don't do it often because I am old and don't have good med insurance, but watching some ahole try to catch every wave is more a peeve than getting dropped in on. Usually when someone drops on you they are a beginner and are clueless. Paddling to the front repeatedly is entitled bull.

The exception being when I'm in Hawaii. The only thing I say in that situation is," Enjoy your wave, Sir."

The place I take my daughter to learn is a beginner friendly beach. In that, I mean there are so many beginners and those on surf lessons being pushed into waves there is no real rules other than try not to get hurt or hurt someone.

Point is, seems like some spots have more beginners than others and some spots seem like there are different rules that apply to the usual patrons. Kuta is the beginner zoo Im talking about, but walk 15 min down the beach from halfway break and you’re at padma, which is alot less crowded and alot more structured. You couldn’t get away with that bad behavior down there on good days; locals would burn you non stop and tell you to “get out of here”. But again, it seems like there is an understanding at some breaks; could be to show patience for beginners, could be like old time serangan where locals understand that guides with guests get a little priority - just trying to make a living, or it could be a lineup of seasoned western expats that follow surfing sign rules of surfing like what i saw posted at beaches in Australia to a tee.

Of course not, they are too good for wavestorm. If I'm able to drop in from the shoulder and ride directly straight at the beach, then obviously the other surfer who is already on the wave needs to yield to me.

Their thought process is that if they are able to catch the wave from the shoulder, then they are the better as it's harder to paddle and catch the wave there.
