Surfing Sunglasses

Postby SirFrancis999 » Sat Nov 20, 2021 6:12 am

Hey all,

I'm finding the glare is becoming very irritating for me lately. I'm also worried about potential eye damage. So has anyone had any success with surfing sunglasses? I've seen some advertised with hydrophobic coatings (LIP Typhoon brand). They apparently help disperse water on lenses making it easier to see. Anyway the typhoons are not cheap so not keen to shell out if not worthwhile. There are cheapy versions around without the hydrophobic for about $40-60. But if I lose clarity after each dunking that will get tiresome. So any experience with these out there? Thanks
Cheers.

I used sun blocking goggles for a while Bought 2 different pairs and lost them both
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Have you tried wearing a baseball cap ? Wearing one makes a big difference for me. FCS has a cap and also a bucket hat with a chin strap, if you're worried about it coming off.

I bought a pair and stopped using them. Water droplets formed on the lens making it hard for me to see oncoming waves. I wear a hat like WKKKChan.

So did your sunnies have the hydrophobic coating? It's supposed to repel water off lens. Just not sure how good it is.

Yes I picked up a cap and it does help a bit with glare. The problem with the cap is when I'm paddling back out. When I'm lying down flat I have to arch my neck back a lot to clearly see oncoming waves, which is quite uncomfortable when I'm facing repeated waves heading back out. But over summer I will be wearing it for sure.

I had a helmet with chin strap that kept the goggles from coming off completely. If you are wearing a wetsuit they have leashes that can go on your zipper. I guess for me the water droplets weren't much of an issue but coming off was a regular occurrence and the helmet was annoying to wear. There are anti fog products that you can buy to help with the water droplets but for me that wasn't as much of a problem as them coming off perhaps an indication of the conditions I surf in.

I wear the glasses all the time. I prefer regular ones with a leash and a neck collar. I like the idea that I can always put them on the top of my head.
When I used back zip wetsuits I would also attach the glasses to a zip leash.

Drops and fogging could be addressed by the spray.
And, I don’t like goggles as you cannot easily put them on the top of the head.

And, I prefer cheap glasses not to be worried about breaking them or damaging them with the salt water.

However, I skip them in winter time when I am wearing a hood

I bought a spray-on product which didn't help at all. I use the glasses while skating.

I guess not all sprays are created equal:)
Furthermore, I spray both sides with a lot product and every time while surfing

Well I definitely wont be getting the prescription version of the LIP Typhoons. Got a quote of $750 - 1100 AU. I'm tempted to get the next model down in the LIP range at around $130 still has hydrophobic coating, fog vents, leash etc. (without prescription - heck I'll get contacts instead if a have to!) I have to try something over summer besides the cap. I've got 2 eyes, and no spares.
