Fun board vs mid-length longboard

Postby Orangerider » Mon Sep 20, 2021 2:14 am

Hello everyone,

I’ve been debating about my next surfboard purchase. Currently, I ride an 8’4 epoxy which has been good to me the past few months, but I’m itching to do more tighter carves on a more responsive board. I’m thinking either a fun board or mini longboard/mid length at around 7’2. On the 8’4, I’m able to up and down the face of clean waves that are 4-7ft (Surfline). At the local breaks that I go to, I prefer being above the lineup of short boards or to the shoulder of them depending on surf conditions as I do not like to compete for waves.

I’m 167cm at 72kg. Looking forward to your opinion, thank you.

My brother in law has been surfing 30+years and he
Is dead set on 7’4 boards, I’ve seen him ride them in 2ft weak mush and big overhead surf. His fab size is 7’4x20 1/2x 3, I dug it so much I had one made exactly like his but but only use it on small days, I posted it a while back: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=37649

Current setup on the 8'4 is 2+1.

Is that a mid-length board in that post? Thank you for sharing.

Would the 7'2 make a difference from the 7'4 (same shape)?

Honestly, 7’4 was it for this design, 7’2 would probably be more nimble but the reduction of volume would mean working harder on waves. I have a 7’2 but a a different design not a direct comparison, but the 7’4 is way easier
