Surf spots Portugal

Postby Bjarne » Fri Sep 06, 2019 11:49 am

Hi everyone, my name is Bjarne and I am currently staying in Portugal for six months (originally I am Belgian). My mate and I went surfing yesterday in Figuera da Foz but the waves came to frequently and were a little too high so it didn't went well. We are both beginning surfers. Does anyone knows a good spot for beginners in Portugal?

FYI: I surfed already for three weeks, popping up and paddling goes well and in Bretagne I did catch a few smaller waves. So you have an idea about my surfing level :D

It sounds like it was just bad conditions for you. That can happen at any beach. You need to check the surf forecast and learn to predict when it will be a suitable size for you. It will be easier and 'better' when the wind is gently blowing straight out to sea (offshore) rather than sideways or blowing towards land.

Hi! It's hard to say a good spot, because every spot changes accordingly to swell size, direction and perid; wind direction and intensity; and tides.
This all elements work on any given spot conditions.

But in Peniche bay (Baleal), it's more probable that you fing some sweet waves for you.

good luck, have fun and stay safe
Honestly the best is that you go with a truly experinced friend, or go to a surf school.
I've seen many surfers suffering a lot and in risk. And after a couple of surf lessons, they always say it was worth it to go on a surf school.

Appreciate you replying this way as knowledge and not sales pitch.

Stay safe and Corona free as things may be quiet for a while!

Hello Everyone! Just planning, at the end of September, to visit some of the cities near Faro. Some surf schools are saying that the waves gonna be between 3-6ft and the others are saying that only 75% of the time gonna be flat. Have anyone of you been there in September and can share his experience? Cheers Stan.
