Portugal in September - surf and culture

Postby Tgordon » Mon Jun 28, 2021 10:33 pm

Hey looking for some advice on Portugal. Taking the wife and baby this September to Europe for a month and plan to post up in one spot for most of the trip. Ideal setup would be a cool town with good food and authentic vibe where I can walk to some fun surf. Striking distance to good waves when the swell hits even better. Any advice?

Hi there!
I am Portuguese.
DISCLAIMER: I don't surf yet (joined the forum to get tips for longboard surf camps actually :)) but my brother have surfed all their lives. Some places they advised me:

- Baleal / Peniche - it seems that you have beaches facing all kinds of angles. so with very different conditions - so good conditions to surf almost guaranteed every single day. Balealhasa chilled vide
- Ericeira near Lisboa is a lovely little town with a lot of expats living there for the surf.
- You can go south to the Algarve, near Sagres / Carrapateira / Aljezur - all authentic places with god surf conditions

Surfing is superb in Peniche/Baleal, but for a town with some vibe, Ericeira might actually be nicer. September can already get heavy swell - then Peniche offers more escape options.

Spot on advice from Oldie, if you are looking for surf camps there are a number catering to older surfers in conjunction with the Pure Surf Camps.

At 70 I was a dinosaur but most welcome at all of them.
A tip, fossil bones and bodies are not made for the sheddie ( accommodation 2 person) go a cabin or a tent!
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷
