not true. absolutely not true. I got stung on my palms and bottoms of my feet when I was 10 years old

Well I also looked it up too.
From Wildmedmd.com says " The jelly fish cannot sting the palm of the hand or sole of the foot ".
From Reddit it said " It's either because the palms have thicker skin or because there are no hair follicles ".
(But like they say "if it's on the internet it must be true".)

But my statement that jellyfish sting "only happens in area with hair follicles and not on the palms" could apply if one were to have hairy palms and feet.

The next time you see a Portuguese Man-o-war pick up the tentacles and rub them between your palms back and forth until it completely disintegrates and let us know what happens (just kidding)
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

As a "beginner" or better perhaps a re-beginner but life long swimmer, free diver, SCUBA diver and boating enthusiast I, frankly, detest the long, baggy board shorts. I do love rash guards however. I would tell you to rock your short, shorts, swim brief or jammer (if you are into modesty) with a rash guard and sun screen. If women can wear beach "lingerie" then I should think men can wear a swim brief that is actually meant for swimming unlike the outfits I see on so many women. For women there are purpose made one piece and two piece swimming suits.

Concerning the blue bottles a more serious answer, when I would get tangled up in Portuguese Man-o-wars I would grab them with my fingers and pull the individual tentacles off. If there were little pieces remaining I would rub sand on them to brush them off or if in the water just swish the area vigorously in the water to dislodge the remaining tentacles. I never had any long lasting stings to the palms of my hands or the callused portion of my fingers. The big mistake people make is to rub the tentacles into their skin which increases the amount of stinging. Also concerning Portuguese Man-o-wars and board shorts, the worst injury I had in terms of potentially lethal or mentally damaging was because I went through a whitewater by pushing off my board and letting the whitewater go over my board and under my chest. It is a technique I still use quite often but once I did just that and a Portuguese Man-o-war went down my shorts along with the water from the wave. I don't know if speedos would have prevented that but I gave it some serious thought. What followed was incredible pain my worse than most stings I have had. I have a theory that the closer to a lymph node the worse the pain. Anyway I ended up under water and feeling rather paralyzed. I felt like I couldn't move. I was just floating under water thinking I'm going to drown because I'm paralyzed. But then I moved my arm to the leash cord and grabbed it and pulled myself up to the surface then undid my shorts and pulled the Portuguese Man-o-war out grabbing it by the bubble. Then put shorts back on and caught a wave to the beach laying down because my legs weren't working properly. As soon as I go to the beach I whipped shorts off and looked for the blue tentacles and removed them then rubbed sand all over to remove anything that I missed. Then I went back in the ocean and dropped shorts again to swish water all over the area and remove the sand. If anyone was watching they probably thought what is that crazy guy doing? LOL

Have to admit, old man, that was quite amusing.

In a ‘thank god it wasn’t me’ kind of way

Yes while funny now it was the most emotionally traumatic surf injury I have ever had. I should probably also mention that Portuguese man-o-wars are not actually jellyfish and are actually made up of large colonies of organisms if I recall correctly

the advantages of wetsuits includes not having to worry about board shorts and much greater protection from jelly fish and blue bottles. I will also mention that some people get much greater reactions to blue bottles than I do. Most of the time if I am stung the effects are gone by 24 hours but for some people at 24 hours they have massive pain and itchiness and this isn't only due to me not rubbing the tentacles into my skin. When I was bodyboarding my friend and I swam into a massive flotilla of Pochos as we called them with both of us have 10 or more Portuguese Man-0-wars stuck on us. We swam in and peeled the ones on our chests off and then took turns removing those on each others backs. I had some initial redness that was much less by a few hours but my friend Mike looked like he was whipped with a bullwhip. He had huge slashes of raised red welts across his chest and back and was in great pain that got worse with time. There must have been a several hundred of them all in one place
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
