Disagree about what ? Your point is for the OP to gain more speed, right ? Well if his engine isn't pointed down the run way he can't take off properly. The plane needs to take off first THEN bank at an angle. Angling in ( stalling the tail, grabbing rail ) is more an advanced maneuver for someone just beginning. ( especially at a dumping beach break )

You need three things to catch a wave, Power, Position and Timing. But if one is weak you need to be strong in the other two. So if you don't have Power ( speed ) then you need to have better Position and Timing. You elated to Timing of when to be where the wave reaches you but I am concerned that beginners utilizing the "angle-in" technique, will make matters worse if they already have a weak paddle.

So here, no speed and no paddle. Wingnut doesn't angle in, he actually angles OUT and does a fade left go right.

Take a look at my first reply

If you are popping up too late, try to turn the board a bit to the side the wave breaks, that might do it.
- By popping up to late - I here are talking about the problem with the wave gets to steep - Maybe that clarifies it?

It looks to me like Wingnut goes left, not directly straight down to the bottom of the wave.

OP writes:

It seemed that if I started trying to catch the wave earlier I'd not catch it and if I waited it was too steep.

Going over this a couple of times my conclusion is:

1. Gain speed and catch the wave before it breaks and gets too steep. (This is done by paddling technique for an intermediate/advanced surfer, or by focusing on moving a lot of water by a beginner surfer)

2. When you´re in the breaking zone, turn the board/angle the board a bit to the side, after landing the pop up (As Wingnut in the video and the video I put up earlier)
