Pop Up Feedback & Board Question

Postby Barmat » Wed Jun 17, 2020 6:24 am

Hey guys,
I’ve been transitioning from a ‘chicken wing’ pop up to a ‘shortboard’ pop up during the quarantine, could you give me some feedback please?

Also, I’m 1,87m and 80kg and I bought a fish (5,8 x 20 3/4 x 2 11/16 with 36,5lt) before the quarantine, which I haven’t been able to try yet because of the virus, but I was wondering if you guys think it’s duckable or will I have problems? My usual boards are around 33 liters.

Thanks a lot!

Looks pretty good to me. Hard to tell where your feet are landing, the first one it seemed like your front foot was a bit to the side of the centre, but that might just be an illusion. Hand placement was good, got to your feet well, feet ended up pretty much in the same place every time, toes were pointing the right way. The only test that counts, however, is when you are actually in the surf

As to duck diving - if you can duck dive your 33L then you can duck dive your 36L. It might not go quite as deep but it wont be a huge difference.

Thanks for the feedback man! I hope I can transfer it to the actual surf.

Barmat , please be aware that practicing pop ups on your board is great for muscle memory and positioning but ends up being jorrible for your board as each foot is landing with half your weight on the board!
You thought about the board on the floor with the mat underneath ,but sadly modern boards develop pop up dents even in the water!

That's an old board which I hardly use so I don't worry much about the dents that may appear, thanks though!!
What are your thoughts on the pop up? Any suggestions?

Then you better practice your pop ups on a decline. In actual conditions, you won’t be landing on a level horizontal surface.
If it’s and old board and not worried about it, put a cushion under the nose, two under mid deck and 3 cushion under the tail, and then try getting up that wave with gravity pulling you forward and down. Your foot placement and angle of your joints will change.

Looks good to me too. Thats about 10 percent of the equation, the other 90% being timing and wave selection.
