I see videos for sale (110% surfing techniques, etc.) that seem promising.

Anybody have some recommendations on good vids to buy that can help take me from Beginner all the way through Intermediate? I'm wiling to pay for whatever is actually good.

Good resources are easily found on youtube for free. The first 100 or so hours of ''surfing'' are just learning to be on your board and navigating the lineup. You just gotta put in the sweat equity.

I'm 170-175 lbs; 5'11"; male; I'd say above average fitness for a 47 year old; low intermediate level.

So why you want advice for a beginner when you are already a low intermediate level surfer ?

But ....... Since you want to learn and like watching other longboarders, I would recommend watching:

Wingnut's art of longboarding

It's not on Youtube. But it has a lot of the basic taught in a real easy to understand method.

If you like that video, skip the #2 and go directly to Wingnut's art of longboarding 3 " Quest for Style ".

But I don't know why you want to watch videos, just surf, that's how you get better. But yes, I understand especially during this lock down, might as well learn from Youtube and such.

Best thing I recommend you do is for you to upload videos of YOURSELF surfing, so we can critique and give YOU advice. Kind of the opposite. What you think you're doing might be totally different than what we can see.

I guess "basics" was the wrong word, but in my opinion I still kinda suck LOL And yes, just trying to do something during this lockdown. Anything not advanced-level is a better way to put it. I like to find the "best" media whenever I'm learning something and then refer to it over and over. Gives me something specific to work on so I'm not just randomly doing whatever.

I've been meaning to get somebody to film me. No volunteers, though I think I can bribe my roommate with after-beach food and beer.

That's actually how I pop up now. At my surf lesson they taught us the toes-on-the-tail-of-the-board way on a big foamy. I didn't like it and then found that exact video you linked to.

Not sure if I'm feelin' the Chicken Wing now. Seems sloppy. I just learned the "shortboard" style popup w/o using my feet on a finless foam board on my bed. Looks the best and most versatile, I'd say. Can't wait to get out to the waves and try it out.

You can not get to being a intermediate until you learn the BASICS first. Yes, I know you hate it that you suck, and we all want to improve, but don't ahead of yourself ( and level ). You need a strong foundation to build upon. Without a strong paddle technique and pop up, nothing after that will matter.

I hope those videos above have been helpful, but the reality is that no video will help you as much as the actual training on the water.

I want a solid video guide to refer back to while learning. When I was getting into surfing, I watched a bunch of tutorial videos, but nothing compared to just getting out there and putting the lessons into practice. Structured videos help avoid picking up bad habits, especially regarding paddle technique and reading waves. Wingnut's Art of Longboarding is a good recommendation if you're into that style.
