East Coast Winter Surf

So if you had to be positioned on the East Coast for the winter and wanted decent surf on the regular, where would you post up. My ability to travel to Baja this winter has been compromised so I’m looking to make it happen closer. Live in Virginia, could travel to the Northeast or rent a cheap place on the Outerbanks. Suggestions? I mainly like to longboard but have been shortboarding more this summer.

OBX is good but i've not been there in the winter. I was there when a swell hit during summer and my god it was glorius. The rip was also mind boggling though so do becareful. Also a flight to puerto rico is only a few hours. You won't need a wetsuit and you're guaranteed to have swell. It's cheaper than staying at obx.

How’s Puerto Rico for a beginner/intermediate?

It has much more spots than Obx. When it is big in obx, it is big nearly everywhere because there's not much wind or swell shelter.

PR on the other hand has so much spots and the coast line isn't a straight line so you always have some spots that are more or less sheltered from the wind or swell. Plus no wetsuits is a great deal to me.

Thanks a bunch for the info. That sounds pretty much what I’m looking for. I’m a motorcycle mechanic so east coast winters give me a lot of free time, finding a cheap way to surf good waves is the goal.

assuming you're not going to the caribbean and staying stateside, I'd say anywhere from NY to OBXNC is great, just make sure you're north of buxton in OBX, the nor'easters don't hit further south the same as they do from buxton north.

if I had to choose within the US, I'd probably say new york/new jersey. similar water temps to NC/VA, better and more consistent surf, and more amenities. just make sure you get a board with some volume, offshore winds will stifle your best takeoff attempts and you need something chunky to help you make the drops
