Here some photos of one of the closest beaches to Tokyo. The break is Kugenuma. Last Sunday of the Obon Holiday season.

Are surfing and skating more popular in Japan now that they're Olympic sports?

Surfing and street Skating have always been popular among Japanese youth, so I wouldn't say any "MORE" popular. But it might change the mind of the older generation that think surfers do nothing and only smoke weed all day.

I’m guessing that going straight is the general rule?

Might be a good time to use a foam board.

Is there much aggression or is everyone more or less accepting that there isn’t much you can do and just stays calm?

You can see Mt Fuji from there I believe

Most of the beginner weekend warriors on their shortboard stand in waist high water, then jump onto the board when the wave comes ( instead of paddling into them ). So when us longboarder paddle and get up further outside, they all just turn around at the last moment right in front of us and we then have to pull out.

There is some aggression from hot head SUPer's

From one of our Southern California friends...

Every time I surf Trestles during a South swell, I feel like I showed up late to the Southern California Asshole Convention. Imagine giving 500 cats a fleshin' ton of catnip and setting them loose in a confined space. It’s absolute chaos. Boards, limbs, inhibitions, boots, dicks, fists, hats, wax, morals, Beefs TV, rocks, jocks, Wavestorms, Man Storms, John Stamos, pros, hoes, and Cotton Eyed Joes - xxxxx’s flying everywhere. It’s like when the Looney Toons Tasmanian Devil becomes a whirling dervish, gobbling up everything in its path - but it doesn’t move. It’s a constant tornado churning around the same trailer park over and over until the swell finally dissipates. I wanted to die, but simultaneously never felt more alive. This is what going to war must feel like.

The waves are worth it (almost), but holy fleshin' xxxxx, is my patience tested to the extreme. Trestles during a south should come with a claustrophobia and potential PTSD warning. fleshin' that place. But also, I can’t wait to go back.

Aren't the Japanese super polite so one could only wish no one will drop in?

That's a crazy amount of crowd. I don't think I'll enjoy surfing in such a crowded break.

I came across this thread and remembered how good it was in the days before the quarantine and the pandemic. It was then possible to relax and smoke cannabis and drink coffee, relax and enjoy the company of friends.
I remember when I first started surfing, my friend offered me an interesting thing, and then we smoked it for days and enjoyed the waves. It's mind-boggling when you stand on them and you are carried by a wave, and you are stoned and feel like you take off, and then you are covered with a wave. It is a pity that now it is impossible to repeat that same season, I tried so hard to get out to the ocean, but I had to move closer to the water in order to somehow enjoy life and remember my youth.

When I was young there was a group of surfers who to me seemed to use surfing as an excuse to get together with friends and drink beer or smoke weed. If there was a good enough excuse to not surf they would just stay on the beach and not go out. I guess mostly I missed out on this because by the time I started surfing I had curtailed my partying and if given a choice of socializing and or getting drunk or stoned instead of surfing I would always surf. But because I made that choice my surfing skill rapidly passed that of those who were more inclined to hang out at the beach and not surf even though they spent a much greater percentage of their life surfing.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
