Is Hawaii full of rich surfers?

Postby BaNZ » Thu Oct 18, 2018 10:07 pm

I saw a video and this kid just ordered 30 surfboards for himself to surf the winter swells. I looked at the price and the average cost is around 700 x 30 = $21,000. Travels around the world to surf and I don't think he is that well known. He is sponsored but not high up in the rankings. It just seems like every time I see a video of someone who lives in Hawaii has a super nice house and bunch of quivers! They are living the dream! Or do they get the boards much cheaper than normal people? 30 boards would last several lifetime for me probably....

Hahahahahaha Are you kidding me? Maybe this kid is a super good surfer and gets the boards for free. Top sponsored surfers get around 100 or so free boards a year but otherwise beg borrow or steal for many young surfers. There are some rich people in Hawaii though. Fortunately you only need 1 board to surf.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

He doesn't "live" in Hawaii. He doesn't work and pay a mortgage. He's just there during the winter months. Even on the South shore with get "snowbirds" that come from places like Canada, to spend time on the warm beach. Those "snowbirds" don't live in Hawaii.

Not "pro" glassed boards with single 4 oz. glassing. Plus those guys are surfing the North Shore. You can't compare 3-5 foot Hawaiian power with most surfers local breaks. ( but heard Rockaway pretty tough too though )

By the way, Hawaii is the most expensive state to live in. Want proof ?

Hawaii is expensive to live in and the properties prices there are insane. I just thought maybe the majority of the people there are super rich and lots of rich kids around.

There are a lot of rich transplants, not nearly as many rich native islanders.

Where is the "there" you speak about ? You mean the 7-mile miracle on the Northshore ? The majority of people don't live "there". It like saying everyone in Hollywood is a movie star. In reality, most are just trying to just get there big break.

By the way, how much are you paying for your rent at your TriBeCa apartment ?

Milk? who needs milk? In Hawaii you can hunt pigs, pick up fruit and spearfish for free.

So you kill a fish or a pig then you have to eat it or it will spoil without electricity, so you have to spend every day fishing and hunting. And fruit that you pick you need transportation to and from areas with fruit that are free for the picking and there are seasons. Both gas and electricity are more expensive in Hawaii and rent and any food that you have to buy. I always got a kick that C&H sugar was grown in Hawaii and yet it is cheaper in the contiguous 48 states.

Even in paradise there's gas/electirc/water/cable/insurance/neighorhood banjar fees/school fees/petrol/car payment/house payment and that's before getting to groceries which aren't cheap here either.....oh yeah and the pool guy! ;)

....I will say I don't spend too much on clothes. One season here and lace up shoes are a rarity.

For those that are interested, Chas Smith’s ‘Welcome to Paradise, Now Go to Hell: A True Story of Violence, Corruption, and the Soul of Surfing’ is a great read about the North Shore and surfing, with insight into Hawaii as a whole and it’s history as well.

It is the perspective of an outsider who wasn't really a surfer but a writer who surfed in order to write an expose in my opinion. Still an interesting read however maybe you have to have some insight into the local mentality to really understand Hawaii and the author was lacking in that. read Barbarian Days by William Finnegan to learn about Hawaii and local surfers. That author knew the locals

Sadly that dream has long since got out of Bed, the happy tropical island native has long been bought out house and home and dispossessed by high rise condos and chain hotels. Maybe pushed into the underdeveloped hinterland . Include the north coast of New South Wales, the spreading conurbation of the coast of California.
Our surfing predecessors and holiday makers have overwhelmed it.
Manyana, fruit dropping from the tree to accompany our pork and Fish, not at all.
Severely saddens me but is reality now!

Here's what I wonder. What percentage of Hawaiians don't know how to surf? 10% . . . 20% . . ?

I would guess that 10% don't know how to swim. Maybe 10% surf and maybe 50% tried it and surfed for a while then quit.

Also on Kauai (my only experience of Hawaii) there are wild chickens EVERYWHERE! Do people eat them?

I did notice that people there just left there surfboards out and about, stealing must not be an issue??
