what board should a kid get

Postby lukathegrom » Mon Aug 14, 2017 7:46 am

hi i'm an intermediate kid surfer i'm 5 foot 1 and 85 pounds right now. My dad wants me to use his 6,0 shortboard thats 29,5 Liters. is that a duck diveable and good size for progression to advanced surfing?

Note that i'm growing quickly.

is it duck diveable - might be a bit hard at your weight but possible. Is it a good size - potentially you can go a fair bit shorter (5'6 or so); but you should be able to deal with a 6' board just fine. And if thats the board you have, then its the board you have! Its not way too big, just slightly bigger than perhaps you could surf. But there is no reason to absolutely surf the smallest board possible.

Also a slightly too big board will help you catch more waves

The person who knows you the best, your true surfing level, your ability to learn is .......... YOURSELF.
The number two person who knows you best is probably ...................... YOUR FATHER.
If he says the 6'0" shortboard is good for you............. THEN YOU SHOULD TRUST what he says.

Boards, like computers, golf clubs, paint brushes or arrows, don't have any potential all by themselves. It up to the user and his/her input which makes it work right. An advance rider can ride anything.

1) How's your bottom turns, cutbacks and backside surfing ?
2) What size/dimensions is the board your riding now ?
3) What shaper and model ?

Reminds me of a golf story....tour golfer got talked into playing a round at a business meeting, so he went out on a championship course in flat soled dress shoes (no spikes), suit minus the jacket....left the tie on. He apparently shot a 67 from the pro tees with borrowed clubs.

Can you duck dive the 5'11" fish ?

I'm 5'2" 125lbs. and turn board with a volume of over 69 liters. You CAN turn a 6'6" if you put your foot in the right spot and have the proper technique.

well my dad decided that the board is probably a bit big for me, so i might get a smaller one when i get a bit better at surfing.
