Was pumping yesterday.....I surfed another spot which was big but not this big.....1.5 OH at the biggest where I was......was worn out even on my new big board..... Pictures attached are from yesterday on the East coast....the video from another east coast spot two days ago....rainy season still can have it's days though the swell is off today and I've the balsa log is in the car.......swell or not, every day can be a surfing day.

How deep is it where it breaks? Or perhaps, how far from where it breaks until its shallow reef?

Breaking like what is pictured is mid tide to higher, chest deep or so if you hopped off your board where you would kick out....deep enough that it isn't an issue until you drop below 1m....I've surfed at a tide level of .75m and was happy to have a vest on because I bounced off the reef on one wipeout. It is usually pretty sectiony, but sometimes it lines up....apparently I missed a pretty good day out there. Reef itself is flattish rock, not spiky with coral heads, but still a scrape on that will leave a swollen infection if not treated correctly (scrubbing out with water, then antibacterial soap with a brush, then putting the sticky brown chinese stuff on it) will hang around for a month.

This is the reef cut medicine....google is awesome....I typed in "sticky brown chinese reef cut medicine bali" and got 20 different images of the stuff....

BTW I picked up a gath helmet.....haven't had occasion to use it yet.....

From talking to surfers who go to third world countries to surf it seems to me that all of them are of the impression that if it hurts like heck then it must be pretty good when pain mostly represents damage being done to your tissues and not necessarily infecting organisms. There is also a common mistaken idea that coral will grow in your wound if you don't clean it out.

The big trick of that Chinese medicine, and why surfers like it so much, is that it closes the wound (instant dry wound) so you can go surf the next day.

The way I understood is sometimes that's ok but other times the wound needs to be open to heal.

I always let my cuts heal before I go in again, very very annoying, but the best way to go i think. But if you're surfing in the tropics only for a couple of weeks during an expensive holliday, I can understand a shift in priorities..

I keep a kit in the back of the car with a scrub brush, detol antibacterial soap and that chinese stuff. I rinse and scrub until I'm nearly in tears, then rinse and scrub with the soap for a couple more sniffles. Then I brown juice it and it heals pretty quick, much quicker than if I don't scrub.
