Don't sandbag your friends

Postby BoMan » Mon Jan 30, 2017 12:51 am

So you’re going to help a friend become a surfer. Excellent!
What should you do to not strain the friendship?

Take them to an uncrowded beginner break.

Start them out with a proper wetsuit.

Get them an instructor so our relationship can remain intact.

Remind them to ALWAYS cover their face/head with one hand when to come up out of the water. Nothing like cutting a session short to rush to the ER for stitches.

Here's another one...explain where they should be and what to do if they can't make it outside.

Every single one of my surfing friends doesn't listen. I got ones that can't swim at all and still go surfing. They rely on the leash.

Or ones that surf a few times a year and go out in overhead conditions.

Actually I'm the same, sometimes I go out when the conditions is way beyond my level. I'm just lucky I didn't get in trouble.

I have heard of a few guys who only surf in the big winter surf. Before the winter surf comes along they start paddling in the river or ocean to build their paddle strength. They only surf the big days where the size limits the number of surfers. I haven't been out in conditions beyond my level but perhaps I used to closely approach those conditions often. Now I am in better shape.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

interesting point.

all that aside. winters beaches are empty and it is a very good thing to learn surfing in such harsh conditions. low waves and a cold weather convert a better man in a sunny mid wave weather. at least thats one good thing about living in the north sea. it prepares you with bad conditions. and when your on vacation it rewards you. Our season is just around the corner....I started doing pull-ups, push-ups, bungee pull downs, dips, ab work, ellipictial work and skipping rope to tone up and expand my cardiovascular abilities along with pushing myself to double time back to the lineup after a ride even though it isn't necessary or paddle back and forth between peaks just to get some more meters in. Just started a couple of weeks ago and can already see and feel the differences.
