Surf t shirts?

Postby kyleisanoob12 » Fri Dec 09, 2016 1:32 am

I'm looking at getting this Hurley shirt for surfing (duh) and swimming, etc. I currently have a rash guard, but it's super tight and rides up a bit, and I feel like a shirt would be more free. If I wanted to wear this shirt around outside or like to school also, would that be weird? Thanks! :D

Kyle you ask regularly whether you should buy a Hurley T shirt rash guard etc.
The answer is simple, if you like the logo and the company, buy the shirts.
If being a surfer dude ( indentifiable) would cause you problems in a Mid west school , go invisible.
Surfing is about surfing not the brands you wear ( Japan excepted, there it is the brands on everything you have that gives you street cred. )
Australia has a lot of fat non surfing men wearing branded surf gear, kills the image immediately.

So you want to buy a loose fitting surf shirt to go swimming ? Won't that create a lot of drag ? You want to buy a Surf shirt to walk around school with ?
IT'S A SURF SHIRT for when you are SURFING !
That's as fake as wearing Hollister, which they make you think is from California, but actually from Ohio ( isn't that in the Mid-West ? ).

Waikikichan was telling us about Japanese fad nerds who buy all the clothes and have a surfboard but it is bolted on to the top of their car because they don't surf, they just are faddist nerds. At least you surf :)
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I'm not even gonna lie cuz I respect y'all surfers, but I can barely surf mainly cuz I live in the Midwest near lakes, and you can't do anything on them. The few times I have surfed tho, it's been lit! So I guess I'm a wannabe nerd too :( on the bright side tho, I really hope to go to college in Cali (probably won't happen), so maybe I won't be a wannabe anymore :D

Kyle ..... we want to get you surfing, really choose Hurley by all means, if you like it end of story.

Surf project for you......
Get good grades to enable you to choose a college campus in a surf zone...... when you get to college don't duck classes too much for surf (I'm being realistic about the surf urge) choose a course that will enable to work in or near surf for your career.
Smart surfers have career, others stay poor and burn out.

I have tshirts that are older than you...lots of time yet to surf....plot your course well and you'll have plenty of years ahead to enjoy.

Hey thanks man means a lot! Totally off topic, so I do apologize, but other than UC/CSU schools, do you know any good schools with good surf? Cali schools don't offer much financial aid for OOS students :( I might go into marine biology though so hopefully I'll have lots of surf time :D

Happy to help one problem with my advice, I'm based in Australia so anything I say is general purpose, a bit more research about where why and how might set your course more clearly.

A colleague at my elementary school went to Santa Barbara City College for 2 years then earned his teaching credential from a California State University. Community colleges are great when you are taking general ed because the class sizes are small and they are more affordable.

My daughter followed a similar path, starting at San Diego Mesa College.

That said, it was hard for me to have academic success while living in a surf town. My dorm was just a few steps away from campus point. Make sure your priorities are clear and remember....

Since that time in Hawaii when you took a lesson on a 10 foot softtop, how many times have you've gone surfing ? You're so amped to go on your surftrip to Cali and "ride" a shortboard. But I think you need to throttle back a bit. There was a surfer from Florida ( who actually could surf ) who dreamed to surf in California. He ended up getting smashed into pillar at Hungtington beach pier and died. It's not going to be like paddling in a lake anymore. The rolling waves in Waikiki are easy and you can get long long rides due to it being a reef break. So don't get deceived or have a misconception that surfing beach break will be just as easy. Surfing is/can be fun, but there are risks to. Keep your stoke but keep it real.

We have so many posers over in NZ that always have the latest Santa Cruz or Billabong caps but in reality they can't surf they just like to show the image that they go to the beach and are "cool" But it shouldn't worry you if you like it go for it.

Some rashes have a loop at the hem for tying to the board shorts so it won't ride up. Loose fitting shirt will cause drag and friction so not a good idea unless you are hanging out at the beach or a pool. In a grand scheme of things they wear out and relatively cheap compared to wetsuits so no point in losing your sleep over them.

As for schools in CA, all UC schools and many of CSU schools are VERY competitive to get in. Plus the tuition as an out-of-state student is sky-high not to mention the cost of living even in the dorm. Going to a community college and transfer to a 4 year university is a very valid option here to save money while getting a good college education unlike some parts of this country where community colleges are somewhat disregarded. I took a CC to a UC school route and am quite happy with the outcome. My kids are planning on a similar path. So if you really want to be in an environment to surf regularly while in college (not sure that's conductive to your academic goal, however) stop wasting your time looking for a perfect piece of clothing and study hard.

kyle, I'd like to jump in on the subject of university near surfing. Pay attention to the comments from BoMan and Salty Dog above. I can tell you we have students from the world-over attending our Community College (CC) in Santa Barbara. I recently hired a young woman that attended a CC in Aptos, CA. Aptos is a sleepy surfing town south of Santa Cruz. CC is a good way to get 1st 2 years for less $$. I did it, too, many moons ago.

I suggest you consider Humboldt State in Arcata, CA. One of my best buddies earned two degrees there. There is surf nearby. Where most of us check for waves that are large enough to surf, Humboldt students check to see if waves are small enough to surf!

UC Santa Cruz, like UC Santa Barbara and Humboldt State, have marine science and/or marine biology programs. Certainly, there is lots of surf near UC Santa Cruz. I'm not sure about the acceptance figures. But, do know Santa Cruz is a wonderful place.

Just for the record: there are two Uni's in the US that have surf breaks on campus. UC San Diego has one surf break on campus. UC Santa Barbara has two!! Both of these schools are difficult to get into. But, if you complete CC in CA, then there is an advantage for transfers. On the other hand, Humboldt has a 76% acceptence rate.

One final note: Humboldt county is a unique land. Be encourged to consider obtaining higher education there.

You can consider rash guards without the tall collars, they tend to look more like tshirts and hence are less noticeable. I find rash guards comfortable and wear them as normal clothing too :)

If you want something inconspicuous which you can also wear around, this isn't bad. I've got one, they dry very quickly.
