Buying pre-owned surfboard... Lightly yellow?

Postby keilani » Mon Nov 28, 2016 9:27 pm

I found a board owned for a year (not used more than 20 times) for $180 that is watertight with a couple professionally fixed dings.
It comes with future fins and a new stomp pad.

I don't mind the repaired dings since it is completely watertight, but it is slightly yellow...
This is also the first board I am going for, so I was wondering if I should worry about the faint color?

No signs of water damage, but the light yellowing has me wondering if that's okay or not

TIA

Yellowing can be from the sun (UV) and generally isnt an issue, although if its only a year old seems a bit odd - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=21824 . But if it was a cheapish surfboard to start off with (and there is nothing wrong with that) then the resin may not have had all the latest UV protection etc and the UV rays go through and into the blank

Still, if its yellow over a wide area then should be ok; if its brown or its yellow in distinct patches then that suggests water in in the blank.

Thank you for the input! And I don't think it's a cheapish board.

Here are a few pics of the coloring for reference...

ALSO, I did find these couple tiny spots in the last pic.
I was wondering if it's something to be concerned about:

If you can go to the guy's house and see how he stores his boards.....if he keeps them inside in a shady cool room but the board turned yellow is one thing....if his board rack is out behind the house in the sun then the board has taken some daily abuse from heat and sun and you should factor that into your decision. A board stored in direct sun will have more issues than just colouring.

look ok to me actually, the yellow is widespread and looks like sun damage - esp on the top, there is generally white where you would have wax and yellow where you dont. The bottom is a bit weird but it could be how the boards are stored, like Big H says. Not sure it is only 1 year old but that is not really relevant, a 10yr old board can be great

For $180 you arent going to get anything blemish free or totally perfect (and if it comes with the fins then its a real bargain). Otherwise seems to be in good condition (nothing obvious anyway).

the board looks good to me but how does it compare to the board you are currently using? What are the dimensions of both boards? I guess I like it because the shape resembles one of the boards I ride although my board has perhaps a little less rocker.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

1) it's probably and EPS board. It's yellowing cause that happens to EPS / Epoxy glassed boards
2) if you're in Hawaii and a newish board with $90 Futures Stretch Quad fins selling for only $180 and you don't know the seller......... it's probably stolen.
