Very stylish Uncle Jaffa - although I'm on the fence about the rhino one!

You might even run into Jaffa in the surf, hopefully without that hat (rhino or devil?); he surfs far south NSW coast.

Noticed from your blog that you are (again) a lawyer - me too. Good to see another one, since its well known that lawyers are able to be experts on anything within an hour. In any case - I really like your blog, very well written and on point. I'll probably link to your posts on buying a first board and a 2nd hand board (if you dont mind) as they are excellent answers to questions that often come up here.

Thanks dtc (hi five fellow lawyer!) and oldmansurfer! Us lawyers are also a bit obsessive, so it's a (hopefully healthy) outlet for my tendencies

And it's great to hear your feedback on my blog. Please do link to any posts you think might be helpful :)

Talk about hats that flip up, has anyone ever tried these ones? http://surfmunkey.com/flipupbill-hats/

Since you are in Australia, I have had several different people tell me that these hats are the 'bomb', although its not entirely clear whether they are actually for sale any more because the guy who runs the site has retired (I sent them a message a few weeks ago but never got a response). But you can probably find out if they are still for sale if they grab your attention

http://www.mcsurf.com.au/products/prote ... hat/1031/1

That one you linked, being a cap, would be good to cut out glare and maybe some sun protection for the nose etc, but obviously wont help the ears or neck. But the flip up brim I can see would be useful when paddling out. Guess it depends on whether you want a lot of sun protection vs just cutting down on glare with a little bit of protection (and use a lot of suncreen). You could probably sew some legionnaire type flap onto the back of the cap

Bloody lawyers!!!! you ought to know or should be advised that the devil is in the detail.
Close observation of the proffered picture would surely be indicative of a Rhino ceros
( derivative of "nose Horn" ).
Devilish detail requires dual side mounted horns, as extensions of protrusions on the temporal bones.
Surely a lawyer of any standing at the bar ( not the wet one  ) could appraise the evidence before them and mount the appropriate argument!
Please post your rebuttal forthwith!

I put it to you that you are wearing the hat the wrong way around.

That would be the horns of a dilemma as your statement is patently a one sided argument.
In reversing the hat, the resemblance would to an extinct sauropod.
Happily Uncle Jaffa is not of that demographic, yet!

Thanks for all the advice! I think I might look into the flip hat as well as the Dakine one. I just need something to shade my face from the sun, I've got my fairly long hair to act as natural sunscreen for my neck

Great tip! I didn't know it could do this. I must've looked like a Royal Navy admiral today in the line-up

British invasion? Perfect theme for those who live in/around New England!

I wanted to have a FCS one but since my local shop didn't have my size so I ended up w/ Dakine. It fits my head pretty well on land but the brim isn't that stiff to stay up.

I hope you've found what you're looking for. But don't forget that you still need to use some sunscreen because the water reflects the sun onto your face. Still a risk of wrinkles :s

Thanks - yes, I put on sunscreen religiously, although I find it doesn't stay on too long in the water!

That's why I did some research last year (I'm not a lawyer)

Water resistant sunscreen should stay at least 40 minutes in the water. Extra water resistant should stay double as long, so minimum 80 minutes. You find it in kids sunscreen, because they play and swim a lot in the water.
So I always use a kids spf 50 sunscreen and it works fine for me. I don't stay in the water for more than 2 hours, that's maybe a difference.

Invisible zinc is my go to for the face, because it doesnt run and get in my eyes. Not that its actually invisible, may as well use coloured zinc to match my board

]I use badger stick sunblock for water sports. I totally plaster my face white (I mean REALLY WHITE) and it stays on with minimal rub-off for the whole 1.5-2 hr session.

I was wondering if any of you surf with a hat on.. When i say hat, i mean like a baseball cap... I see pro surfer Melanie Bartels wearing a hat while ripping at the same time.. How do you keep it on? Cuz i hate it when the sun is in my eyes.

Small days I wear a regular baseball hat sometimes....hand to the head if wiping out or a duck cause it won't stay on, but smaller longboard days are pretty much dry hair days.

I have an FCSbucket hat I wear sometimes as well. Can flip up the front brim when paddling to see better, though it makes me look like a pretty Japanese tourist..... :)
