That's a familiar spot when I drive on 101, off shore oil derricks and all. Someday I'd like to go there when it's not so pumping!

NO somebody stuck a world war and Pearl Harbour between that and my conception.
However a return trip to Waikiki with a board ride beside my wife who doesn't surf in an outrigger canoe would be suitable .
Hope I can do it during the Duke Kananamoku Festival.
With thanks for the gift he bought to Australia

That picture of Greg Noll is at Pipeline not Waimea Bay
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Let's get a few dates and breaks right. The Greg Noll picture is contemplating outside pipeline in 1966 only five years after Phil Edwards first rode it in 1961, Waimea Bay had been ridden since 1957 , there was a session and some dispute about who rode it first.

It is worthwhile viewing the Bruce Brown and the Bud Brown movies of this time go and understand where it came from!

It is an interesting side note that " modern " Balsa Malibu chip surfboards produced shock and awe amongst the Australian lifesavers read lifeguards) when they out performed the old 16 foot surfing paddle skis.
The American lifeguards were here as part of the cultural program around the Melbourne Olympic Games of 1956
Two of the lifeguards were Greg Noll and Tommy Zahn ( also known for dating Norma Jean who became known as Marilyn Monroe) .

It rocked the core of Aussie surfing and then the Gidget movies hit.
The Bruce Brown , Bud Browne movies sort of treated Aussie surfers as yokels but gave some of our film makers a big start.
There is a long history , great stories many hidden in the woodwork in each country.

The film 'Riding Giants' has, at least for its first half, a lot of the Greg Noll, Waimea, Gidget stuff (then the second half is how great Laird Hamilton is, but its still interesting)
