BTW the waves in all the shots felt bigger faster and better than the photos.

Can't help but notice the gloves, are those the gloves you were talking about a while back, with the little flaps between the fingers like a ducks foot?
Also amazing carve

A few answers about the ancient days:

Balsa boards were the exception , 16ft hollow ply surf skis on which some guys stood riding straight to shore, they had a whiskey cork in bunghole to drain water out after each wave ( these were surf lifesaving tools) , there were surfoplanes. (Inflated rubber rafts invented by an Australia doctor) . There were plywood paipo boards with cupboard handles and wooden boards very much like Alaia board you rode prone.

Balsa boards in the 9ft 10ft range came with American lifeguards Greg Noll , Tommy Zahn ( who dated !Marilyn Monroe ) they came out for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and blew the ply ski Aussies out of the water. The sound of saws and a race was on to construct plywood malibus . Balsa was found in the warships left over from WWII ( their life rafts ) and balsa construction began.
I started in 1958 ...... The can opener was already secondhand .
I was born in the first half of the last century

Yes duck flap gloves....... Old guys need enhanced paddle power and they protect my hands from skin cancer , since I needed pristine hands to treat my patients, a good idea.

Even most big publications could not afford colour photography ....... TVs were black and white as were many movies, I used to dream in black and white as did many people who were conditioned by TV.
Think that is strange? Have you been hunting Pokemon lately?

What is stranger is that I also dream in black and white in nightmares specifically but not in everyday dreams.
And nope, not into the whole pokemon game that everyones playing I don't see the point, surfing and computer stuff keeps me busy

I rode one of these when I was the same age as the boy in the picture. My friends and I called them "surf mats" and also used 'em to thrash each other on the beach.

I wish they made something portable like that for adults, like an inflatable SUP but smaller and more rigid so you can stand up on. Might be useful for surfing trips where one has to fly. Of course, performance wouldn't compare to a real surfboard, but for most surfers that shouldn't be an issue

There are a mass of inflatable SUPs Uli is one. Nash and Hobie and most brands have a number in their lines!

Surfoplanes were fully solid rubber skins and inflated a at the gas station tyre pump with a tyre valve.

Surf mats wer rubberised canvas and inflated by mouth, the newer mats are space age fabrics Fifth gear flyers and Krypt mats , I consider them stealth surf machines. Travel anywhere any time without boards and hit the surf!

If you have a copy of Drive-Thru Japan, Donovan rides the ULI in "real" waves.

but for those prices, I'd rather pay airline fees and risk my board getting damaged :)
If they made it 10 times cheaper, it might be worth it.

Somewhere there is a 35mm movie of me and few others bodysurfing Brenekis on a 10 foot day. Somewhere else is a 8mm movie of me paipo boarding Hanakapiai and another 8mm movie of me paipo boarding Pinetrees in Hanalei
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I'm assuming that footage is sitting in some dudes garage now, all forgotten and not reformatted in a digital format, because that sounds very interesting to watch, too bad I'll probably never see it :?

The 35mm stuff was in a surf movie but I can't figure out which one, maybe it has since been edited out. The Hanakaipiai footage is in Hollywood somewhere because a film editor took the footage. The other one I never saw so not sure but I was paipo boarding and caught a wave where I got tubed completely covered and came out then tubed again and came out again for 5 times. I was riding the small inside portion of the wave hoping it would wall up and tube for another tube ride when I noticed this guy jumping up and down on the beach right in front of me. He was screaming "I got it. I got it. "I got the whole thing!!!" I screamed back "What?" He answered "I got your whole wave on my camera from the beginning to the end." I yelled back "Alright! Send me a copy." He yelled back "sure" . I have no idea who he was and doubt he knew who I was but I am still waiting for my copy.
