A few answers about the ancient days:
Balsa boards were the exception , 16ft hollow ply surf skis on which some guys stood riding straight to shore, they had a whiskey cork in bunghole to drain water out after each wave ( these were surf lifesaving tools) , there were surfoplanes. (Inflated rubber rafts invented by an Australia doctor) . There were plywood paipo boards with cupboard handles and wooden boards very much like Alaia board you rode prone.
Balsa boards in the 9ft 10ft range came with American lifeguards Greg Noll , Tommy Zahn ( who dated !Marilyn Monroe ) they came out for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and blew the ply ski Aussies out of the water. The sound of saws and a race was on to construct plywood malibus . Balsa was found in the warships left over from WWII ( their life rafts ) and balsa construction began.
