Taking a Video/Snapchat video while riding a wave?

Postby ChronicCactus » Sun Jul 17, 2016 9:27 pm

Was thinking of buying a sturdy, waterproof case for my iphone to take videos and pictures when I have a surf sesh but have never seen anyone taking videos with a phone while riding/catching a wave. I've only seen people with GoPros taking videos of other people riding waves. Has anyone on here tried taking a POV video of riding a wave (while holding a phone in one hand!). Also, I think it would be sick to Snapchat catching a few waves (for those of you who don't know its a social media app for sharing pictures and videos). Though i think I would get a couple of judgemental looks from other surfers if I brought a phone out.. :unuts:

Do that and someone will kill you
The last thing we needed at a crowded surf break is phone a friend!
GoPros on nose of board is one thing but having mobile phones in the line up. Buzz ding whirr and selfies and chatty chats.
There has to be somewhere on the planet where phones don't go, let it be the surf zone!

The Go Pro has a stick for selfies, a mouth piece for forward facing shots, therer are gath helmets with visor mounted Go Pros, there is even a baseball cap or head band for frontal shots ( I would not recommend these as they could cause serious injury in a face plant). :blah:

I tried to video myself with a phone in a waterproof case. I couldn't see much of myself because of being too close to the phone, but POV should be OK. Try this in small waves , at your own risk. Wear the phone in a waterproof bag around your neck.First, start recording. When you paddle your phone should be on your back. Once you are riding, grab the bag with the phone, and point it wherever.

There's probably POKEMONs located out in the ocean too. So sooner or later you'll see iPhones out in the water.

I was out with a friend in the line-up one day and he had a phone with him because he was on call. He not only didn't get a call, but he also wasn't allowed a wave by the local crew for the whole session.
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

Here I thought I can leave all the mundane stuff of land living behind while surfing. UNITED WE STAND AGAINST UNNECESSARY COMMUNICATION DEVICES IN THE LINE UP :ninja:

To OP: from a more practical standpoint, if you call up your buddy to tell him that you are gonna show him how well you can shred then fail to live up to the expectations, you are going to regret that phone call and the video clip that he now has an access to. I know I would

haha thanks for all the responses. I guess bringing a phone out to the lineup is the equivalent to wearing crocs on a date  was thinking about this case for my phone http://www.watershot.com/products/watershot-for-iphone-6-splash-housing along with a wrist strap solely for the purpose of photography in the ocean. i might risk looking like a complete fool in the lineup just so i can take some cool ocean wildlife photos as well as some sunset shots!

For that price you can get a dedicated Olympus 16 megapixel still and video camera for waterproof shooting with wifi and able to link to your phone.
Non dorkish, even produces adequate shots. and safe in water , get leak phone gone and all your phone stuff
Good water can produce shots like this

your phone won't do it as well and believe it people accept cameras in the line up.
Don't be snotty or a phone surfer!

Filming a video or a Snapchat clip while riding a wave sounds thrilling, but it definitely takes skill (and a waterproof phone case!). Balancing while capturing the perfect shot is no easy feat. Have you tried filming while surfing? Any tips for keeping the phone steady?

It’s not hard. Throw it in the water and let it sink to the bottom. It will be very steady.
