Surfers ear / exostoses

Postby poider » Thu Mar 10, 2016 2:08 pm

G'day surfers,
I don't know if this is breaking the rules but I will try and if it is inappropriate then I am sure the Admins will boot me out quick smart...
I am interested in a condition called exostoses, also known as surfers ear. I am not a doctor and stand to gain nothing from this interest, But i would love to talk to some surfers who have suffered or are suffering from this condition, especially from families that have generations of surfers in them.
The condition is the closing over of ear bones that occurs in surfers, especially cold water surfers. So if you don't mind answering a couple of quick questions Please don't hesitate to send me a private message or reply to this one.
Thank you
Peter

There is no problem with the post , there is quite a bit of material in posts in the forum already.
I did a review of ear plugs last year.

In Australia there two schools of thought re surgery , one is through the ear canal and the other cutting and swinging forward the ear flap to gain access to the ear canal, the skin surfacesover the boney growths is cut open drawn back and the boney growth removed by what could described as grinding or drilling them away.
Both can done under local anesthetic but the grinding noise is very disturbing. General is more often used!
Time out is needed for proper healing.

Return to same conditions in the surf will most likely promote regrowth that is more likely to be quicker!

Wear earplugs religiously and you will love yourself for it. Train yourself to. Discapline yourself too. Buy bulk packs and have them everywhere. No excuses. Very painful surgery...
