Sometimes I even make it out. I could probably count the the full throated tubes I have had on one hand .

Interesting question - At what point can a surfer claim a tube?
Head dip? Nah... Cover up? Nope, not good enough...
For me, for it to count, the lip has to be throwing out in front of the surfer, landing in front of the surfer, and for there to be an unbroken wall of water, not just some water landing on the far side of the surfer. Basically, the surfer needs to be invisible from in front of the wave. Oh yeah, and the surfer has to make it out again, otherwise it's just a cover up.

By my own definition, that makes the number of tubes that I've successfully surfed pretty close to zero

Agree with the definition. That makes my count after today's fun session, euh... zero..

I was looking for videos of real powerful spray from a collapsing tube. I am sure they are out there but couldn't find any so far but here is one of typical spray action that could sort of fit the description you posted. http://www.surfermag.com/videos/the-thickest-hossegor-ever/#886GQJeCudo9Vy2G.97 I have been blown off my board a couple times and almost blown off my board a few times and spit out of tube numerous times
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

That guy qualifies as an oxygen thief . He has been presented on this forum before and although the clip has gone viral I hope he caught it!

Teahupo'o will give you the barrel spray. Check out videos from there

I'd link mine but don't want to make you jealous.

Um, I mean, if it existed

Disowned? Disinherited. Just plain dissed.
All I can say is thank heavens I missed that entire joke due to international transmissions.
I sentence you to compulsory viewing of Neil from the Young Ones or our very own Australia Kylie Mole.

There is a break on Kauai called Cannons because it shoots spray like it was shot out of a cannon. On even just a 4 foot wave the power of the spray at Cannons can sting like a muther. But the most powerful sprays I have experienced were from Horners and Kealia which aren't known for spraying tubes but it is where I surfed mostly.

Some really good footage from angles where you can see what's involved (including spray shooting out the tube)....this came from the "Surfing Speed" instructional section of this very site.

Got to say, once i get three good boards, i'm going to try to keep them in the best condition possible and just spend my surfing money on plane tickets to try as many different waves and beaches as possible.

You'll soon grow out of that

Boards are disposable - the first time you ding them, you're distraught, the second time, you're mildly irritated, the third time, you don't notice, then you snap one and you're secretly quite proud.

The problem with really caring for your boards is that you back off waves with shallow waters/spiky reefs/a board-snapping lip. Much better to have a healthy disregard for safety and common sense.

DBB, I think you surf mass produced boards too much and not ones made just for you and made to last.

I suppose no one ever gets rid of a board? Ok so it's a funny meme but not true.

Wrong wrong wrong.

I have one mass-produced board, because I wasn't 100% sure of what I wanted in a new type of board. Currently, I have four custom boards – that's real custom, not off the rack, they say my name on the stringer. Some of them I've had for 10 years. Other boards that have been more lightly glassed, I've ridden them until they were unusable. And others, I've managed to snap in heavy surf.
My shaper recently retired after making boards for 40-odd years, including for loads of pros and at least one world champ. "Made to last" is not always a great thing in a surfboard, particularly not a performance shortboard.

My Mrs has a completely different logic:

Me: "I think I need a new board".

Her: "Yes, I think you're right, go and get a new board".

Her: *immediately buys new shoes*

I doubt any of us will get much benefit from a super light board....... other than a psychological boost. If it was just an inch wider or longer and had more glass we would never know (except we paid for that). Maybe waikikichan?
