Hi Dirk from the Gong welcome to surfing waves! Help is at hand!
You can't go wrong
What sort of budget are you planning to go on and what time of year, season about April to later October but thinning out in swell at either end!
Camp or boat? Boat may be challenging as you could be stuck with a bunch of frothing hot surfers who will take on spots beyond your abilities!

I can recommend Lombok , Kuta to Gerupuk stretch, some camps home stays and van rides to alternate waves.
Bali heading west will get you away from the super dense crowds but be aware that line up rules are bent by lots of beginners who are without any awareness.

Talk a little more about what you want! Where in the Gong do you surf ? That will give me an idea of what I can suggest.

Thanks for the warm welcome I grew up surfing Shellharbour area breaks called shallows, farm beach, warilla barrack point anywhere there is a wave. I am at uni at the moment in Canberra so I do lots of traveling to south coast broulee, south durras, marouya etc again if there is a wave I'm in .

Know and have surfed them all , I particularly like bone yards and gerroa black point and down to Golfcourse at Ulladulla , I'm much further south at Merimbula. An old fart Longboarder but doing Indo since 1979.

Hey, a fellow Canberran, who woulda thought! (although I suspect you don't call yourself a 'canberran')

Co incidentally again, my wife is from Wollongong, so I've been there a lot. Although she is more north, Woonona/Thirroul area. Also surf the Sth Coast, when I can - job and family hinders that, just stay at uni as long as you can.

Nice yeh Canberra is ok I meet my partner here but we should tee up some surfing dtc and Jaffa I'll let you know when I head to mimby love it down there. Got mates in tura beach and always hit up fishpen jumping off the warf at high tide hahah I love surfing off the bar there
