I am all for beach cleanups. I did my own personal beach cleanups long ago before it was a thing (1973) Filled my Volkswagen van with trash bags to the top four times. Not sure what surfers against sewage stand for but I am all for beach cleanups

Surfers Against Sewage is the UK's equivalent to Surfrider.

Here's an update from the weekend.

The Autumn Beach Clean Series in Numbers!
We knew that something special happened last weekend, but after two days happily crunching numbers we are so stoked to report that the weekend of the 17th, 18th and 19th of October saw more than 3,000 volunteers join us to remove almost 2,000 bags of marine litter, including approximately 250 bags of 'Ghost Gear', from our precious beaches.Together we removed more than 10 TONNES of marine plastics from our the marine environment. A huge THANK YOU to all the coastal communities and volunteers that joined us!

Is sewage that much of a problem in UK?

It's not such a big problem these days but there are still places that allow the discharge of untreated sewage straight out off the coast. Typically this can is during big storms and such where the normal quality guidelines can affectively be ignored. I still think it's the case that beaches in the UK are classified as recreational (and subject to water quality guidelines) during late spring until end of Autumn.
When I first started surfing at Cromer 20 years ago the Pier toilet emptied straight out underneath. Not too pleasant when the drift swept things through the lineup. East Runton, just round the coast, had a sewage pipe that went straight out off the beach. It was removed a long time ago, but did help with the banks so it wasn't all bad
