Moving to Algarve with family for a winter, where to? :)

Postby chemic » Sat Aug 02, 2014 2:47 pm

Hello dear fellow surfers ;) I'm Priit from Estonia (a small, green but cold country in Eastern Europe)

We are making preparations for moving to Portugal for a winter, probably Algarve region and rent a place to stay.

We are looking for a small town/village on the coastline with basic needs (medical care, food places, internet etc) - it doesn't have to be something fancy with mad nightlife.. more like natural and good place to spend time with 6 month old kid :)

My (wave)surfing skills are a bit over beginner.. but I'm a advanced level kitesurfer/wakeboarder/snowboarder for years. My main goal is to spend good time with my family, live on a coast (so I can walk/longboard to the beach with my newbie board) and learn to properly surf waves ;)

We are planning to reach Portugal somewhere at the start of September.. all suggestions what and where to look for apartments/parthouses and what are the average prices off(summer)season?

Thanks a lot,
Priit, Karolin & Robin

Hi Priit!
Aljezur it is a good option of what you are looking for. Small town in the south coast, already Algarve but yet in the Atlantic ocean, with basic needs (medical care, food places, internet etc) and a good place to be in family. Near you find many surf spots for beginners or advanced surfers, Carrapateira where you can do also kitesurf and a very nice places to do walk around.

Another possibility can be Lagos but it is much more busy and bigger town.

Here you can find information about Aljezur www.visitalgarve.pt/?idioma=uk and here about living in Portugal www.livinginportugal.com/en/

Hope that these information can help you.

All the best and good waves!
António

Thanks alot for that reply Ride351

We have spent some time for now.. to find an apartment near to this area.. but haven't had any success.. Internet is full of touristic offers for rich german and uk people, but we are looking something more local-like and rent from a family/person with more friendly price ;) Any suggestions how to find that kind of offers?

All the best, and hope to meet you folks between the waves soon ;)

Aljezur it's a country village but very popular and touristic in the summer season.
What i suggest is that you go spend a few days there to search locally. Ask about it at local people in cafes, supermarkets and stores. Mostly the locals are friendly and help if they can. There are also many foreigners living there and that may help you.

I've been searching on the internet in several real estate agencies and found nothing except for holidays, maybe because the season they all prefer to rent for holidays and earn more with it.

I'll stay attentive and let you know if i discover something new.

We are based in Ericeira but one day when we go down to south or you come up to here, we can get some waves.

All the best!

Thanks a-lot for your input Ride351, we are heavily googling at the moment to get something temporary with reasonable price/location value. And keep looking ahead while we arrive Aljezur or some place near there :)

Please keep us posted if you happen to find anything interesting to check. We are travelling with our Multivan so we are probably visiting Ericeira and Peniche as well.. so yea.. let's try to keep contact.. if you happen to use skype.. feel free to add me as 'chemic'

Thanks ago for your help mate!
