Interesting.
for a start, my thoughts are that if your pop up works for you consistently, then while there might be a 'better' way in theory, what works is the best for you now.
I tried this style at home (on the floor) and its certainly a pretty easy way to pop up and pretty stable. However, I have some nagging doubts as
- none of the top surfers do it, so its presumably not the 'best' way
- it relies very heavily on using your footpad and there must be real prospects of your foot slipping off the back
- its definitely going to be a slower techique than the standard 'push and swing under' as you have two movements (foot up, then stand). Paddling with your leg bent up like that might be a bit difficult, if you end up needing a few extra paddles (although probably its doable)
- if you are a big guy (say over 80kg), i wonder if the push will put too much weight on the tail
However, its not unknown for longboarders to use essentially this technique, since their toes are on the board anyway.
On the plus side, it does mean your rear foot always is in the right spot after standing.
If you had a big enough footpad to avoid the risk of slipping, then probably its worth a go if you are having problems. Not sure I would change from the 'classic' technique to this, however
