Heya :D

I just discovered this web page and very much like all the advice and tips on here!

I'm fairly new to surfing have had a few lessons and really enjoyed it. I'm planning on going out to surf for a week and want to hire out a board, could someone give me advice on what board would be best to get? I'm 5'11 and I weigh 85kg.

Thank you!

Sally

I wish you sunshine, Sally I would be looking at a board of maximum length of 8ft but I fee this may just a little too long to handle in the water by yourself, going down to 7ft with greater width may help cut the length, the volume recommended is between 60 and 65 litres, so the fun board range is your best option if your are coming from soft boards then it will feel a lot more skittish.
6ft 6 inches would be the lowest I would consider and then only if you did well on the softies.
If you are near where you had lessons see if they have other boards to hire> Good luck have fun first and foremost

Good eye - carbon rails with stringer-less 1.25 lb EPS foam. With pad and leash the board is about 18 lbs.

I've been looking for something a little more floaty, but still small enough to fit inside my suv. I had my eye on craigslist for over a week and finally bought this for $100, watertight, a few dings on the bottom, seems really solid. 8'2"x 22" x 3.125" Brand is pure fun, a local shaper in southern CA.

Heres the latest addition to my quiver, 5"9 JS Evo. Should not of gone so short so fast, but I'm determined and working out hard. Fitness is not quite upto scratch That being said I've caught a couple of waves and feel soooo nice under my feet, swell is calming down over here in Bondi over the next few days so ill be out on it again in next couple of days

Didnt come with fins, so just using my FCS PC-5's atm, I got a M5 center fin to run as a thruster

Looks good - and you are fairly 'compact' yourself, so a 5ft9 isnt as incredibly short as it would be for a lump like me. You havent struck a great time to visit Sydney - either howling gales and storms with unrideable swell, or nothing at all.

If you have some transport and some time, head down to the NSW Sth Coast for a few days (but do it before Christmas, because from Christmas to mid Feb its nuts). Probably about 2.5hrs drive from Bondi. Bendalong/Mollymook for the surf; and Jervis Bay for the beauty. PM me if you are going, I know that area well.

Thanks Guys appreciate the offer alot! Agree with you on the trip dates, but hey cant control the weather. Gales / storms have calmed down now as you know Jaffa, The sun is poking its head out today and the wind as dropped and is coming from the s/sw so hoping bondi bay will provide some shelter. going to head out about 3/4 when the winds is even calmer!

Im thinking of extending my holiday, While Aus is super expensive and ive spent about 6 months worth of saving, I most prob wont get this chance again. Ill let you guys know :) Thanks for offer!

When I was in HK the exchange rate was 1AUD=4HKD (or 3.8 at one stage). Even though I was working in HK being paid in HKD, I used to think "40HKD for a sandwich, thats like 10AUD, no way." Paying 120HKD for a main course was a special occasion.

Now that the AUD is doubled in value, HK will probably seem cheap.

So if you only had come to Aust 10 years ago ... (you were probably still in school, but anyways)

Why specifically a fish for your fiancee? You said she is a little better than you I would suggest a hybrid or funboard about those sizes or even up to 7ft.
At even intermediate stages of learning you need boards that will catch waves, more waves = more chance the develop skills.
Talk with her, better still introduce her to the forum there are quite a few surfing sisters who can point the way! :woot:

Her dad is an old surfer (unfortunately in a wheelchair now and can't surf) and with chats from him he recommended somthing around that length from my research it would seem that a fish is probably best as it has the extra width to provide volume and help with catching waves but should also have the manoeuvrability that she wants.
