The new short/hybrid high performance boards

Postby Tazza » Thu Jul 04, 2013 12:32 am

Hey guys

Just wondering you're thoughts of the performance/hybrid boards that are coming out. i.e, Hayden shapes - Hypto krypto, DMS - crumpet, firewire's performance/hybrids... Like all these 5' foot whatever and like 19 -20" wide.

Ive been surfing for around a year now, Gold Coast of Australia. And feel I have really improved, in turns, confidence, take offs you know the whole lot. Im currently riding a 6'0 sideways stock board which is thick and is almost 20 wide.

Im considering buying one of these performance/hybrid boards as I like the width, but I was wondering have any of you guys have ridden these types of boards in waves similar to Snapper, Kirra, Burleigh heads, South Stradbroke Island or just normal beachies out the front?

So yeah thoughts on boards like these opposed to everyday surfing at your local break, they say these boards can hold 6ft which I reckon would be a bit weird. (yes i know i still have alot to learn) Just if anyone has insight on these types of boards and would like to share that, it would be great!

Cheers!

17 Year old grom.

FireWire I hate, lol but the Hayden shapes are sick they flex a little weird but they are super skatey and fun. I mean you can really go wrong with any board you actually try first. I know the FireWire line usually had demo boards!

I used hybrids for a long time before I went back to shortboards. They greatly imporved my surfing, got me back into small boards.

Depending on the particular board, I've got a board very similar to a CI pod, and it's nowhere near as settled on a steep face as a normal shortboard, and I find I back out of steep drops way more than I should. I just don't have as much confidence on take off as if there was a bit more length and rocker. That said, will catch most waves with ease, and a point break with a bit of shoulder is ideal as you can really use a lot more of the face than on a shorty. Just my 2c based on the pod.
