sprained ankle advice

Postby cocoroko » Mon Jun 17, 2013 12:19 am

hello! i recently sprained my right ankle (it did the flop to the right thing). it's mild, but still healing after a few weeks. when i surf, i usually wear my strap on my right ankle, i'm a bit reluctant to put the strap on it, since it chugs a lot when you are in the water. i tried surfing once after this, and it didn't feel very good. :( my ankle is definately getting better by day, but i'm afraid that the strap would not make it any better. i've been itching to get out in the water! are there any alternatives or tips to this? i greatly appreciate any advice. :)

Cocoroko, hi hope you heal well, up to 12 weeks is about standard for an ankle sprain to come reasonably right! By strap do you mean leash (if you do) theere are leashes that can be worn just below the knee, and even now a belt that goes around the waist that takes a leash This one is good if you have had a hip or knee replacement> Think about the below knee leash.

There are ways of strapping the ankle that will help in the short term but the ankle need after healing to self strengthen and develop the full range of movement surfing requires!
A physiotherapist or movement physiologist can teach you ankle strengthening exercises, Investigate

I have sprained the same ankle badly - 5 times! The reason being I do not keep up with the strength training exercises. Once you do a bad sprain, it is never the same. The only way to keep it in shape is by continually working it out with resistance bands and balancing pads.

Surfing is not about standing up.
It's about the board - moving on the wave.
Standing up just happens to help.

Maybe you should try wearing a compression ankle sleeve for surfing, which is what I am using. I have been suffering from foot pain due to increased activity. These compression stockings help prevent most pain, and even though I experienced some rolling and bunching, nothing distracts me during exercise. If you wear them to surf, you should be more comfortable.
